Mumbai’s metro network has introduced India’s first Automated Pantograph Condition Monitoring System, developed to strengthen predictive maintenance and improve operational efficiency. Implemented by MMRDA, the system replaces manual inspection methods with AI-based real-time monitoring using laser scanning, 3D imaging and machine learning. It reduces pantograph inspection time from about 30 minutes to a few seconds while improving fleet availability and maintenance efficiency by nearly 90–95%.
