Waaree Energies Ltd has commenced operations at a battery energy storage system (BESS) container manufacturing facility in Gujarat through its subsidiary, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd. The facility has an annual manufacturing capacity of 5.15 GWh, an increase from the originally planned 3.5 GWh, following improvements in production throughput and battery cell energy density. The company also outlined plans to expand its BESS container manufacturing capacity to 20 GWh over time. The development forms part of Waaree's strategy to strengthen domestic energy storage manufacturing as demand for grid-scale storage solutions grows alongside India's renewable energy capacity additions.
Waaree Energies Ltd has commenced operations at a battery energy storage system (BESS) container manufacturing facility in Gujarat through its subsidiary, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (Waaree ESS). The announcement was made during the past week through a regulatory filing, marking the company's entry into large-scale domestic manufacturing of battery storage systems.
The facility has an annual manufacturing capacity of 5.15 GWh, exceeding the originally planned capacity of 3.5 GWh. According to the company, the increase was achieved through improvements in production throughput and enhanced energy density of battery cells, enabling higher output without proportionate expansion of manufacturing infrastructure.
A battery energy storage system stores electricity in rechargeable battery units, allowing energy generated from renewable sources to be retained and supplied when required. Such systems are increasingly being deployed to improve grid reliability, manage fluctuations in renewable power generation and support peak electricity demand.
Waaree Energies stated that it intends to expand its battery energy storage system container manufacturing capacity to 20 GWh in the future as demand for energy storage solutions continues to increase.
Sunil Rathi, Director at Waaree Energies, said the growth of renewable energy generation in India would require reliable and domestically manufactured energy storage systems to support grid stability, energy security and long-term sustainable development. He added that Waaree ESS is developing manufacturing capabilities for 3.5 GWh of lithium cells alongside 5.15 GWh of battery pack production as part of the company's strategy to supply domestically produced energy storage solutions.
Waaree Energy Storage Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Waaree Energies, focuses on the development of advanced battery technologies and integrated energy storage systems. The company supplies storage solutions for utility-scale projects, commercial and industrial applications, as well as infrastructure developments requiring battery-backed power systems.
The commencement of the Gujarat facility comes amid increasing deployment of battery energy storage across India's renewable energy sector, where storage systems are being integrated with solar and wind projects to improve power availability and facilitate round-the-clock electricity supply. The expansion of domestic manufacturing capacity also aligns with the broader objective of strengthening India's clean energy supply chain and reducing dependence on imported energy storage equipment.
