Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have an important role in India’s overall development and remain a key part of the economy, officials said at a vendor development programme in Akola. The two-day programme was organised by the Development and Facilitation Office in Nagpur under the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to support MSMEs and improve their access to government initiatives. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said the country's rural economy and agriculture sector have become more resilient due to better irrigation, higher farm mechanisation, improved crop varieties and the growth of allied activities. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra noted that these developments have reduced the impact of rainfall deficiencies on agricultural output and rural incomes. Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta also highlighted that increased irrigation coverage, easier access to farm credit and technological improvements have strengthened the sector over the past 15 years. The central bank also reiterated that its monetary policy remains driven by inflation and growth data.Read more

India is expected to become a USD 5.1 trillion economy in FY29, according to the International Monetary Fund's latest projections. Responding in the Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government is pursuing a broad-based growth strategy covering agriculture, manufacturing, MSMEs, infrastructure, services and digital transformation. She also highlighted measures announced in the Union Budget 2026-27 to strengthen key sectors, improve competitiveness, attract investments and generate employment. Separately, she shared that banks recovered INR 32,466 crore through SARFAESI proceedings during FY25 against dues of over INR 1.03 lakh crore.Read more

The Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance has launched India's first sovereign-backed Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance product under the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool (BMIP), expanding the country's domestic maritime insurance framework. Developed by New India Assurance Company, the policy provides coverage against third-party maritime liabilities with an indemnity limit of up to USD 1.5 billion. The move builds on the successful rollout of BMIP's war risk insurance, which has reduced premium rates and strengthened domestic underwriting capacity while supporting India's efforts to reduce dependence on overseas insurance markets.Read more

Himachal Pradesh is looking to unlock nearly INR 25,000 crore in new economic opportunities by promoting science and technology-based innovations across agriculture, forestry, bio-economy, tourism, and hydropower. Speaking during the 'Atmanirbhar Yatra' regional outreach conference in Shimla, HIMCOSTE Member Secretary Pushpendra Rana highlighted the commercial potential of forest resources, biofuels, bamboo, and value-added products. The US has imposed a 10 per cent tariff on goods imported from India under a new trade measure linked to the enforcement of laws against forced labour. The revised tariff is lower than the 12.5 per cent initially proposed after India amended its foreign trade policy to prohibit the import of goods produced using forced labour. The move is part of a broader US action covering 60 economies. While India has opposed the investigation behind the tariffs, the reduced rate is being seen as an indication that trade discussions between the two countries continue to remain active.Read more

India’s policy-driven growth has helped the country remain the world’s fastest-growing major economy despite increasing global uncertainty, ITC Chairman and Managing Director Sanjiv Puri said while addressing shareholders at the company’s Annual General Meeting. He said recent geopolitical developments, particularly the West Asia crisis, have made global volatility more structural than temporary, affecting trade and energy security. Highlighting India’s policy reforms, Puri said they have strengthened economic resilience. Foreign banks have passed on the Reserve Bank of India's policy rate cuts to borrowers and depositors more effectively than public and private sector banks during the current easing cycle, according to the RBI's latest monthly bulletin. The data showed that foreign banks recorded the steepest reductions in lending as well as deposit rates across both fresh and outstanding accounts. The central bank also noted that the transmission of policy rate cuts remained particularly strong in sectors linked to repo-based lending, including infrastructure, reflecting the growing impact of external benchmark-linked lending norms.Read more

India has stepped up its engagement with Chinese companies as diplomatic and economic ties continue to improve. Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami recently met senior executives from leading Chinese businesses and reaffirmed the Indian Embassy's support for companies looking to invest and expand in India.
