Maharashtra has launched an INR 15 crore AI-driven initiative to digitally map and study prehistoric petroglyphs across 107 villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling at the Gharaunda toll plaza on the Panipat–Jalandhar stretch of NH-44, further expanding its technology-driven toll collection network. The system enables vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping, using overhead sensors, cameras and FASTag-based electronic toll collection to automatically deduct user charges. Gharaunda becomes the fourth toll plaza in the country to adopt the MLFF system after installations in Gujarat, Delhi and Rajasthan. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will deploy and upgrade an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) across 1,205 km of National Highways in Delhi-NCR and adjoining regions to improve traffic monitoring, incident response and digital enforcement. The project will cover 408 km through full-scale deployment of ATMS infrastructure, while 797 km of existing corridors will be upgraded with advanced video-based monitoring systems. The initiative will integrate artificial intelligence, automated incident detection, FASTag-enabled digital platforms and command-and-control centres to strengthen highway safety and operational efficiency. The Maharashtra cabinet's infrastructure sub-committee has approved the extension of the Phase II North Corridor of the Nagpur Metro from the Kanhan River to Kanhan town at an estimated cost of INR 310.35 crore. The 1.4-km elevated stretch, proposed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro), will include a new elevated station at Kanhan town and is expected to improve connectivity for around 20,000 additional daily passengers. Infrastructure projects costing more than INR 150 crore each have recorded a cumulative cost overrun of around INR 5.4 lakh crore, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's (MoSPI) monthly report for May 2026. The report monitored 1,987 ongoing projects across 17 Central ministries and departments, with the combined revised project cost rising to INR 42.50 lakh crore from the original estimate of INR 37.09 lakh crore. Transport and logistics continue to account for the largest share of projects, while road transport, railways and coal remain the leading implementing ministries. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has restored road connectivity between Gulabgarh and Machail in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district by operationalising a 140-foot triple-double reinforced Bailey bridge at Chishoti, replacing a structure destroyed in a cloudburst last year. Built in just 12 days by the 118 Road Construction Company under Project Sampark, the bridge reconnects the remote Machail region before the annual Machail Mata Yatra begins in July. The Maharashtra cabinet's infrastructure sub-committee has approved a INR 1,722.40 crore road project connecting the Bandra Fort end of the under-construction Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) with the Savarkar Sea Bridge. To be implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the 3.55-km link is expected to significantly reduce travel time between south Mumbai and the western suburbs while accommodating around 3,500 passenger cars per hour.
