Synopsis

The Maharashtra cabinet's infrastructure sub-committee has approved the extension of the Phase II North Corridor of the Nagpur Metro from the Kanhan River to Kanhan town at an estimated cost of INR 310.35 crore. The 1.4-km elevated stretch, proposed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro), will include a new elevated station at Kanhan town and is expected to improve connectivity for around 20,000 additional daily passengers. The project will also enhance access to surrounding towns, mining areas and the Mauda Super Thermal Power Project. Funding will be shared between the Centre, the Maharashtra government and concessional multilateral loans.

The Maharashtra cabinet's sub-committee on infrastructure has approved a proposal to extend the Phase II North Corridor of the Nagpur Metro from the Kanhan River to Kanhan town. The 1.4-km elevated extension, estimated to cost INR 310.35 crore, received approval in the past week following a proposal submitted by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro).
According to an official statement, the proposal was cleared by the infrastructure sub-committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The extension will form part of the ongoing expansion of the Nagpur Metro network and will add an elevated station at Kanhan town.
The proposed corridor is intended to improve public transport connectivity for Kanhan, which has a population of around 35,000. The project proposal estimates that between 5,000 and 6,000 people currently commute between Kanhan and Nagpur each day, with the metro extension expected to provide a faster and more reliable transport option.
Beyond Kanhan, the extension is expected to strengthen connectivity to several neighbouring locations, including Ramtek, Tekdi, Kandri Mines, Nagardhan, Gondegaon Mines and the Mauda Super Thermal Power Project. The state government said the project is expected to improve regional accessibility while supporting daily travel for residents, workers and industrial commuters.
According to the official release, the metro extension is projected to serve nearly 20,000 additional passengers every day after becoming operational. The proposal forms part of the broader Phase II expansion of the Nagpur Metro network, which aims to extend rapid transit connectivity to developing residential, industrial and commercial areas around the city.
The project will be financed through a combination of equity contributions from the Central and Maharashtra governments, interest-free subordinate debt and concessional multilateral funding. Both the Centre and the Maharashtra government will contribute equity of INR 39.88 crore each.
In addition to the equity component, the funding structure includes interest-free subordinate debt from both governments, while approximately INR 155.18 crore will be raised through concessional multilateral loans. The financing model follows the structure adopted for several metro rail projects across the country, combining government support with external funding to reduce borrowing costs.
The latest approval adds to Maharashtra's ongoing investment in urban transport infrastructure aimed at expanding metro connectivity beyond core city areas. By extending the North Corridor to Kanhan town, the project is expected to improve access to residential settlements, industrial locations and employment centres in the Nagpur region while strengthening integration with the existing metro network.
