The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will roll out AI-based crowd monitoring, QR-enabled public information systems and digital street museums across Mumbai as part of a smart governance initiative. The programme aims to improve crowd management, enhance public safety and provide residents and tourists with digital access to the city's heritage. QR codes installed at key locations will offer historical and civic information, while AI surveillance will help authorities monitor congestion and manage high-footfall public spaces more efficiently.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled a technology-led urban management initiative that will introduce artificial intelligence-based crowd monitoring systems, QR-enabled digital information services and digital street museums across Mumbai. The measures are intended to improve public safety, strengthen civic management and promote the city's heritage through digital infrastructure.
The initiative was announced in the past week as part of BMC's wider programme to integrate smart technologies into public spaces. Municipal officials said the proposed interventions would be implemented at busy locations across the city to assist with crowd regulation while providing residents and visitors with easier access to civic and historical information.
Under the plan, AI-powered surveillance systems will be installed at high-footfall locations to monitor crowd movement in real time. The technology is expected to support municipal authorities and law enforcement agencies by identifying congestion, enabling quicker responses during emergencies and improving the management of public gatherings and events.
The civic body also plans to introduce QR codes at prominent public locations, allowing users to access information through smartphones. The digital platform will provide details on nearby civic amenities, public facilities and the historical significance of selected landmarks. Officials said the initiative is intended to improve public engagement while making civic information more readily accessible.
A key component of the programme is the development of digital street museums that will showcase Mumbai's history and heritage through interactive digital content. Rather than establishing conventional museum spaces, the concept will enable residents and tourists to learn about the city's architectural, cultural and historical landmarks while moving through public streets and open spaces. The QR-based system will serve as the primary interface for accessing this content.
According to civic officials, the programme aligns with Mumbai's broader smart city objectives by combining digital infrastructure with urban planning and public services. The use of artificial intelligence is expected to support better operational management, while the heritage component seeks to increase awareness of the city's historical assets without requiring additional physical museum infrastructure.
The initiative also reflects the growing adoption of technology-driven governance tools by urban local bodies across India. AI-based monitoring systems, digital information platforms and smart public infrastructure are increasingly being incorporated into municipal projects to improve service delivery, public safety and visitor experiences.
Implementation timelines and the locations for the first phase of deployment will be finalised by the civic administration. Officials said the programme would be introduced in phases, with priority given to high-density public areas and heritage precincts where digital infrastructure can enhance both urban management and public engagement.
The BMC said the initiative represents an effort to combine technology, public infrastructure and heritage conservation within a single civic framework, supporting more efficient city management while improving access to Mumbai's cultural and historical assets.
