The Belagavi district administration has made Aadhaar authentication compulsory for all property registrations in the district, responding to concerns about fraudulent transactions involving duplicate identity documents. District Commissioner Mohammad Roshan issued an order requiring sub-registrars to verify the Aadhaar details of all parties at the time of registration to prevent impersonation and protect public and government land. This directive follows reports of cases in which individuals allegedly used forged Aadhaar numbers to transfer ownership of ancestral properties without the owners consent. In response to the wider issue of misuse of duplicate Aadhaar numbers, the district minister has instructed the formation of a joint task force comprising senior police and revenue officials to investigate the matter. Authorities have highlighted the threat posed by fake Aadhaar numbers, which may bear mismatched photographs and names and have been linked to various fraudulent activities beyond land transactions.Read more

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to raise up to INR 10,000 crore through municipal bonds, aiming to fund water infrastructure and the northern extension of the Mumbai Coastal Road. Officials confirmed the civic body is in the accreditation and credit rating process, expected to take one to two months. Plans include issuing "blue bonds" for water projects and toll-backed bonds for coastal roads. This marks a shift from BMC's traditional self-funding approach, driven by rising liabilities and the Union Budget incentive of INR 100 crore for large bond issuances.Read more

Haryana is set to pilot a faceless property registration system in Faridabad, with the project expected to begin by the end of March. The three-month trial will be conducted in one tehsil and closely monitored before any statewide expansion. Hosted on the MeitY Cloud, the system aims to digitise the entire registration process, reduce physical interaction and limit human discretion. Officials say the initiative could improve transparency, speed up registrations and reduce procedural delays while strengthening public trust in land transactions.Read more

Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal has raised concerns that the Union Budget signals an economic slowdown, citing weak growth in Central revenue receipts and cuts across key sectors. He pointed to marginal revenue growth of under three per cent, reduced allocations for welfare and social sectors, and delays in fund disbursals for major schemes like the Jal Jeevan Mission. Balagopal also linked domestic economic pressures to global trade dynamics, GST restructuring impacts, and risks posed by free imports, while stating that Kerala's demands were ignored.Read more

The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has declined to extend the deadline for its one-time settlement (OTS) scheme, meaning around 7,200 plot allottees in the Noida region now face possible recovery action if they do not clear outstanding dues by the end of February. The decision was taken at YEIDA's most recent board meeting, where officials observed that despite multiple previous extensions and reminders since December 1, only a small fraction of defaulters had availed themselves of the settlement offer. Total outstanding dues amount to nearly INR 4,950 crore, and the limited response to the OTS window prompted the board to maintain the existing deadline. The authority's board also approved the allocation of land for a model school and reviewed progress on stalled housing projects under the state government's rehabilitation policy, involving more than 6,800 homebuyers.Read more

Residents in several Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) layouts are welcoming their transition into the governance framework of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), seeing it as a milestone in civic rights and democratic participation. Under the new model, areas long outside the direct remit of city municipal governance will be integrated into the GBA's five municipal corporations, offering residents elected representation, structured municipal budgets and formal channels for grievance redressal. Communities in neighbourhoods such as Banashankari 6th Stage, JP Nagar 8th and 9th Phases, Anjanapura Township and Sir M Visvesvaraya Layout have for years experienced limited accountability and deteriorating infrastructure due to administrative gaps. The handover to GBA is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, with residents hopeful that enhanced civic management will strengthen service delivery and local engagement. The move follows broader administrative reforms that dissolved the older civic body and instituted a decentralised governance structure.Read more

The Bombay High Court has held that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) cannot unilaterally impose Transferable Development Rights (TDR) in lieu of monetary compensation when acquiring land for public infrastructure, directing the authority to pay cash compensation instead. The ruling arose from a petition by a Kurla resident whose 630 sq m parcel was acquired for the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) project, and who had challenged an earlier award granting only TDR. A division bench of Justices Manish Pitale and Shreeram Shirsath determined that the statutory framework of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 1974 clearly contemplates monetary payment for land acquisition, and that offering TDR without mutual agreement falls outside the Act's provisions. The court directed MMRDA to determine and pay just monetary compensation within six months, rejecting the authority's contention that TDR could substitute for cash compensation under the legislation.Read more

At least 61 individuals in Mumbai have been defrauded of a total of INR 2.41 crore by persons posing as officials capable of securing Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) flats at subsidised rates, a complaint registered with Rabale police has alleged. The case was lodged by a property consultant who said he, a colleague and 61 clients were misled by the accused into making advance payments for purportedly low-cost MHADA housing in areas including Powai, Wadala and Worli. Payments were collected on promises of flats at below-market prices with potential resale gains, but when the complainants sought to complete the transactions they discovered the listings and accompanying documentation were fake. One key intermediary has already been arrested in a related matter, while another suspect remains at large as investigations proceed.Read more
