The Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reviewed the current economic situation and risks to the economic outlook at its latest meeting in Chennai. The Board assessed both global and domestic challenges that could affect economic conditions.
The meeting was the 624th meeting of the RBI Central Board and was chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra. Along with the economic review, the Board discussed several operational areas related to the functioning of the central bank.
The RBI said the Board reviewed the functioning of its committees as well as the Ombudsman Scheme. The Ombudsman framework is an important part of the RBI’s customer grievance redressal system for regulated financial entities. The Reserve Bank - Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, introduced in 2021, brought multiple earlier RBI ombudsman mechanisms under a single framework and follows a jurisdiction-neutral approach.
Deputy Governors Swaminathan J, Poonam Gupta, Shirish Chandra Murmu and Rohit Jain attended the meeting. Other members of the Central Board who were present included Revathy Iyer, Sachin Chaturvedi, Anand Gopal Mahindra and Somanath Sreedhara Panicker.
The economic review comes as the RBI continues to monitor developments in both international and domestic markets. Global economic conditions, financial markets, inflation, growth prospects and domestic economic activity remain important factors for monetary and financial policy discussions.
The Board’s review of its operational areas also covers the internal mechanisms through which the RBI carries out its regulatory and institutional responsibilities. The Ombudsman Scheme, in particular, provides a formal route for customers to raise complaints related to deficiencies in services provided by entities regulated by the RBI, subject to the conditions of the scheme.
