Synopsis

Coal India Limited (CIL) has secured an INR 2,831.11 crore contract to develop a 600 MW solar power plant at Jalaun Solar Park in Uttar Pradesh. Awarded by Bundelkhand Saur Urja Limited, the project comprises two 300 MW units and will supply electricity at a tariff of INR 2.73 per kWh. The project strengthens CIL's renewable energy portfolio and supports the company's strategy to expand clean energy infrastructure alongside its core mining business.

State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) has secured a contract worth INR 2,831.11 crore to establish a 600 MW solar power plant at Jalaun Solar Park in Uttar Pradesh. The award, announced in the past week, marks one of the company's largest renewable energy projects and reinforces its efforts to diversify into clean energy infrastructure while expanding its non-coal business portfolio.
The Letter of Award has been issued by Bundelkhand Saur Urja Limited, a joint venture between NHPC Limited and the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). The project will be developed within Jalaun Solar Park and comprises two solar generation units of 300 MW each, taking the total installed capacity to 600 MW.
Under the terms of the award, the electricity generated from the project will be supplied at a fixed tariff of INR 2.73 per kWh. Coal India said the project is expected to be completed within 18 months from the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Before construction begins, the company will complete the required documentation and execute the PPA, the Implementation Support Agreement (ISA) and the Land Rights Usage Agreement (LRUA). It will also deposit the applicable solar park development charges before signing the ISA.
The solar project represents another step in Coal India's strategy to expand its renewable energy presence while supporting the country's clean energy transition. Although the company remains India's largest coal producer, it has been increasing investments in solar power, renewable energy assets and low-carbon infrastructure as part of its long-term diversification plans.
The Jalaun project is expected to strengthen renewable power generation capacity in Uttar Pradesh while contributing to India's broader energy transition objectives. The development also aligns with the government's emphasis on increasing utility-scale solar installations to meet rising electricity demand through cleaner energy sources.
Coal India continues to account for more than 80% of India's coal production, while simultaneously expanding investments beyond conventional mining. The latest contract adds a significant utility-scale solar asset to its renewable energy pipeline and demonstrates the company's growing role in developing large-scale energy infrastructure. Upon completion, the 600 MW facility will rank among the major solar installations in Uttar Pradesh and support additional clean power generation capacity for the state's electricity network.
