Synopsis

The Bihar government has sought expedited approval from the Centre for road infrastructure projects worth nearly INR 15,000 crore, aiming to accelerate connectivity across the state. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary raised the matter during a meeting with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, requesting quicker clearances for key national highway proposals. The discussions also covered larger road investments worth over INR 53,000 crore that are at various stages of planning and execution, reflecting Bihar's continued focus on strengthening transport infrastructure and supporting regional economic growth.

Bihar's road infrastructure ambitions received renewed momentum after the state government urged the Centre to fast-track approvals for a fresh set of highway projects. During a high-level meeting in New Delhi, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary pressed for early clearance of projects collectively valued at around INR 15,000 crore, while also reviewing the progress of several major national highway initiatives already underway. The move is part of Bihar's broader strategy to improve regional connectivity, ease freight movement and support future industrial and economic development.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to discuss pending infrastructure proposals and requested that road projects awaiting approval receive expedited clearance. The proposed projects are expected to strengthen Bihar's highway network by improving inter-district connectivity and enhancing links with neighbouring states.
Among the key issues discussed was the early approval of road projects worth nearly INR 15,000 crore, which are currently awaiting various stages of central clearance. According to the state government, timely approvals would allow work to commence sooner and help accelerate infrastructure development across strategically important transport corridors.
The meeting also reviewed the status of a much larger portfolio of highway projects valued at over INR 53,000 crore, many of which are already under construction, in the tendering stage or under detailed planning. These projects include highway widening, new bypasses, bridges and expressway links aimed at improving both passenger mobility and freight transportation across Bihar.
State officials highlighted that improved highway infrastructure will play a critical role in reducing travel time, lowering logistics costs and enhancing access to industrial clusters, agricultural markets and emerging economic zones. Better connectivity is also expected to strengthen links with neighbouring Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Nepal, supporting interstate trade and regional integration.
The Bihar government has been actively coordinating with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to advance multiple road projects over the past few years. Several highway corridors are being upgraded to four or six lanes, while new greenfield alignments are also under consideration to accommodate future traffic demand.
Officials expressed confidence that quicker approvals from the Centre would help maintain construction momentum and enable the state to achieve its long-term infrastructure objectives. As Bihar continues to witness rising investment in transport infrastructure, the proposed projects are expected to form an important part of the state's broader efforts to improve connectivity, attract investment and support sustained economic growth.
