The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) directive requiring CCTV cameras at large construction sites to monitor dust emissions has stalled due to builders' privacy concerns. As part of AMC's 'Good Construction Practices' initiative to curb air pollution, sites over 10,000 square meters were mandated to install at least four cameras with a 20-meter range and one month of backup storage. Builders, however, argue that live surveillance infringes on privacy, leading many to resist full compliance. While some have installed cameras at entry and exit points, the AMC has faced difficulties enforcing the live feed requirement. The situation highlights the challenge of balancing environmental regulations with privacy rights in the construction sector.Read more

This decision comes in the wake of the Chembur fire tragedy that resulted in seven fatalities, leading the court to demand stricter safety measures. The new amendments require high-risk buildings to install fire towers with two-hour fire resistance, evacuation lifts, and ventilated lobbies. High-rises over 90 metres must have break tanks with fire pumps every 65 metres. These regulations will be integrated into the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) for Greater Mumbai, enhancing existing fire safety laws.Read more

The Karnataka High Court upheld the Bangalore Development Authority's (BDA) authority to accept or reject bids in site auctions without providing reasons. A division bench overturned a single-judge ruling that had ordered the BDA to accept a bid from Sachin Nagarajappa. The court affirmed that under the BDA (Disposal of Corner Sites and Commercial Sites) Rules, 1984, the BDA is not obligated to explain bid rejections, provided they serve the public interest and aim for the highest price. As no evidence of fraud or misconduct was found, the court supported the BDA's discretion. This ruling reinforces the BDA's operational autonomy and sets a precedent for future public property auctions.Read more
