The Maharashtra government has extended its special amnesty scheme for residential Nazul land leaseholders in the Nagpur and Amravati divisions for another year, until July 31, 2026. This decision, aimed at benefiting an estimated 5,000 leaseholders in Nagpur alone, allows for the conversion of leased land into freehold ownership. The extension comes after a highly successful period where the state government's revenue surged to INR 24.65 crore in one year under a reduced 2% conversion fee, a significant increase from the INR 9 crore collected over five years at the previous 5% rate. The move is a boon for citizens seeking clear property titles and simplified transactions.Read more

The Maharashtra Real Estate Appellate Tribunal (MREAT) has ruled that MahaRERA cannot extend possession deadlines without homebuyers' approval. The ruling followed a case filed by Neha and Nitin Walavalkar, who had been waiting for their flat in the Clan City-Ruby project in Taloja since December 2017. The tribunal rejected the builder's claims of COVID-19 and infrastructure-related delays, directing payment of interest to the Walavalkars from January 2018. This decision reinforces that possession terms in agreements remain binding and cannot be altered unilaterally by regulatory authorities.Read more

Since 2011, the West Bengal government has distributed 2.26 lakh land deeds for home construction, along with 1.80 lakh agricultural deeds and 47,000 forest deeds, strengthening land rights for vulnerable communities. Purba Bardhaman district alone has received 28,840 home deeds. The initiative complements the state's Banglar Bari scheme, launched in December 2024, which provides up to INR 1.20 lakh for rural families to build permanent homes. Despite funding hurdles from the Centre and some implementation challenges, the program has advanced housing access. By granting legal, inheritable ownership, the land deeds empower families with stability, collateral for credit, and a path to long-term economic security.Read more
