The first operational stretch of Pune Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjawadi with Balewadi, is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi before the end of September, according to officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis has invited the Prime Minister to Pune for the launch. The 13-km Maan-R K Laxman Museum section, covering 12 stations, received provisional safety authorisation from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety on July 23 and is awaiting a formal inauguration date.
The first operational stretch of Pune Metro Line 3, connecting the Hinjawadi IT hub with Balewadi, is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi before the end of September, according to officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis has invited the Prime Minister to Pune for the formal launch, although the exact date is yet to be finalised.
The 13-km section between Maan station in Hinjawadi and R K Laxman Museum station in Balewadi comprises 12 stations and received provisional authorisation from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on July 23. The safety clearance allows passenger operations on the approved section, but the corridor has remained unopened as authorities await confirmation of an inauguration date.
Officials from Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), the special purpose vehicle implementing the corridor, said work is under way to obtain CMRS approval for the District Court metro station. Depending on the status of the required approvals and the final launch arrangements, there is also a possibility of providing a direct connection between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar when the service begins, instead of limiting the initial operation to the currently cleared section.
Shri Devendra Fadnavis has also indicated that the Prime Minister's proposed Pune visit could include the inauguration of the underground metro corridor between Civil Court and Swargate. The visit may also include the foundation stone laying for proposed extensions, including the Swargate-Katraj section and an elevated corridor between Pimpri Chinchwad and Nigdi.
Shri Devendra Fadnavis cited the use of Pune Metro during the recent Ganpati festival immersion period, when around 3.5 lakh commuters travelled on the network, as evidence of increasing ridership. The proposed Line 3 is expected to provide an additional public transport option for commuters travelling between the city's western IT corridor and central areas.
Pune Metro Line 3, also known as the Puneri Metro, is planned as a 23.3-km elevated corridor connecting Hinjawadi with Civil Court through 23 stations. The project is being developed under a public-private partnership model through Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd, a joint venture involving Tata and Siemens. This differs from the earlier Pune Metro corridors, which were implemented by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation.
The Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar route is one of Pune's heavily congested commuter corridors, with substantial daily traffic associated with the city's IT hub. The opening of the first section is therefore expected to provide a rail-based alternative for commuters once the formal inauguration date is confirmed and passenger services commence.
