India is positioning itself as a major destination for data centre investments, with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighting opportunities for Japanese companies to participate in the sector. Goyal said India has received investment commitments of around USD 200 billion from major global hyperscalers. During his meeting with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akazawa Ryosei, he identified trade, technology cooperation, investment and tourism as four key areas for stronger bilateral ties. He also pointed to opportunities in AI, semiconductors and related industries, while encouraging the Indian community in Japan to learn the Japanese language.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has invited Japanese companies to explore opportunities in India's growing data centre sector, highlighting the country's expanding digital infrastructure requirements and the investment interest already shown by global technology companies.
During his meeting with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akazawa Ryosei in Tokyo, Goyal said India and Japan could strengthen their partnership across four areas — increasing trade, expanding technology cooperation, encouraging investments and promoting tourism.
Goyal said data centres offered another area where India could work closely with Japan. He noted that major hyperscalers from across the world have committed around USD 200 billion towards investments in India, underlining the scale of the country's data infrastructure opportunity.
Between October and December 2025, Google announced a USD 15 billion investment, Microsoft committed USD 17.5 billion, Amazon announced USD 35 billion and Digital Connexion committed USD 11 billion towards AI infrastructure, including data centres in India.
The government has also proposed a tax holiday for the data centre sector until 2047 as part of efforts to attract more investments into the industry.
Goyal said he had interacted with representatives of several leading Japanese companies and found strong interest in expanding cooperation with India. He pointed to India's strengths in areas that could support Japanese technological development, particularly AI, semiconductors and the wider ecosystem around these industries.
He said India's semiconductor and related technology market has a large domestic demand, with the opportunity estimated at around USD 150 billion. The growing requirement for computing capacity, AI infrastructure and digital services is expected to support demand for data centres and related facilities.
Addressing an Indian community event in Japan, Goyal also highlighted employment opportunities available for Indian workers in the country. He said Japan has demand for caregivers, nurses, plumbers, electricians, masons, carpenters and drivers, along with highly skilled professionals including AI specialists, PhD holders, engineers and chartered accountants.
Goyal encouraged members of the Indian community to learn Japanese, saying knowledge of the language and culture could open up greater employment opportunities. He also said remittances sent from Japan to India contribute to the country's economic growth.
The Indian diaspora in Japan numbers more than 60,000 people.
Goyal also criticised previous UPA governments, saying Indian travellers were earlier viewed with suspicion at foreign immigration counters and were sometimes considered potential overstayers or migrants who might not return. He also recalled instances of Indian travellers being treated differently by foreign airlines.
He said India's global standing had improved considerably over the past 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The minister's comments come as India continues to seek greater foreign investment in technology and digital infrastructure while deepening economic cooperation with Japan.
