Synopsis

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will begin the first phase of Terminal 1 redevelopment by demolishing the north section of Terminal 1-B from January 2027. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), operated by the Adani Group, has started redistributing flights between Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Navi Mumbai International Airport ahead of the work. At least one-third of international air traffic movements will shift to Navi Mumbai from October, followed by the movement of at least one-third of Terminal 1 traffic to Terminal 2. The phased approach is intended to reduce disruption to airline operations and passengers.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has informed the civil aviation ministry that it will begin demolishing the north section of Terminal 1-B at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from January 15, 2027, as part of the terminal’s redevelopment.
The airport currently has a capacity of more than 50 million passengers and handles over 950 flight movements a day. Terminal 1, which is nearly 80 years old, has already undergone partial demolition. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have capacities of around 15 million and 40 million passengers, respectively.
MIAL plans to initially restrict the redevelopment to the north section of Terminal 1-B, which handles around 5 million passengers annually. The airport operator has informed the civil aviation ministry that limiting the first phase to this section is intended to minimise the impact on airline operations and passenger convenience.
As part of the transition, at least one-third of international air traffic movements will be shifted to Navi Mumbai International Airport from October 1. From October 25, at least one-third of the air traffic movements currently handled at Terminal 1 will be moved to Terminal 2.
MIAL will provide airlines with around three-and-a-half months of transition assistance before demolition work begins at the north section of Terminal 1-B.
The airport operator has already started operational changes. Akasa Air moved its domestic operations from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 from August 1. MIAL is also holding discussions with domestic and international airlines on shifting some flights from Terminal 2 to Navi Mumbai International Airport and from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2.
MIAL has also asked the civil aviation ministry to consider setting up a Joint Transition Group chaired by the civil aviation secretary. The proposed group would coordinate with airlines and other key stakeholders during the transition and help minimise inconvenience for passengers.
Both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports are owned by the Adani Group. Navi Mumbai International Airport is therefore expected to play a larger role in handling Mumbai-region air traffic as redevelopment work progresses at Terminal 1.
