Tata Power Renewable Energy has commissioned a 190.5 MW solar firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) project at Kalasar, Bikaner, Rajasthan, forming part of a larger 460 MW FDRE project that combines solar generation with energy storage to enable on-demand power delivery. The project will supply energy to discoms HPPC, MSEDCL and NPCL. With this commissioning, the company's total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.4 GW, of which around 6.9 GW is currently operational.
Tata Power Renewable Energy on Monday said it has commissioned a 190.5 MW solar firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The project forms part of a larger 460 MW FDRE initiative being developed by the company, according to a statement.
FDRE refers to green power paired with energy storage systems designed to ensure on-demand electricity delivery, addressing one of the central challenges associated with renewable generation, namely its intermittent nature. By integrating large-scale solar generation with advanced energy storage and grid support technologies, the Kalasar project is intended to deliver reliable, dispatchable renewable power rather than the variable output typically associated with standalone solar installations.
The company said the commissioned capacity will supply energy to three power distribution companies, namely Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL), extending the project's reach across multiple states through long-term power supply arrangements. Tata Power Renewable Energy described the project as another significant milestone in India's clean energy transition, citing its role in combining solar capacity with storage and grid-support infrastructure to enhance the reliability of renewable power supply to the grid.
With the commissioning of this project, Tata Power Renewable Energy's total renewable utility capacity has risen to 12.4 GW. Of this, approximately 6.9 GW is currently operational, comprising 5.6 GW of solar capacity and 1.3 GW of wind capacity. The remaining capacity of close to 5.5 GW is under various stages of implementation and is expected to be commissioned in phases over the next 24 months, according to the company.
The Kalasar project adds to a broader pipeline of FDRE and hybrid renewable energy projects being developed across India, as the country's power sector increasingly moves toward pairing renewable generation with storage solutions to meet round-the-clock demand from discoms and industrial consumers. Rajasthan, with its high solar irradiance and large tracts of available land, has emerged as one of the country's leading hubs for utility-scale solar and hybrid renewable energy development, hosting several large projects developed by major power generation companies in recent years.
The commissioning also reflects the continuing scale-up of Tata Power Renewable Energy's project portfolio, as the company works toward expanding its operational and under-construction capacity across solar, wind and storage-integrated projects, in line with the broader national push toward increasing the share of renewable energy in India's overall power generation mix.
