Two people were rescued after Panama-flagged cargo vessel MV Ocean Winner sank in the Bay of Bengal while carrying 24 crew members and 72,100 tonnes of iron ore fines from Odisha’s Paradip coast. The vessel, bound for Singapore, had departed on August 20 and was reportedly transporting the cargo from Paradip towards China. The Indian Coast Guard has intensified search and rescue operations, with nearby commercial vessel MT Aisopos assisting in the response. The crew comprised 20 Chinese, three Myanmarese and one Bangladeshi nationals.
Two crew members have been rescued after the Panama-flagged cargo vessel MV Ocean Winner sank in the Bay of Bengal off Odisha, prompting an intensified search and rescue operation by Indian maritime authorities.
The vessel, which had 24 people on board, sank about 230 nautical miles from the Paradip coast while carrying iron ore fines from Odisha. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said multiple agencies were coordinating the response and that the two rescued crew members were receiving medical attention.
The identities and ranks of the survivors were being verified. According to officials, the vessel was carrying 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmarese nationals and one Bangladeshi national.
The Indian Coast Guard has stepped up search and rescue efforts in the affected area. As part of the response, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) diverted MT Aisopos, a commercial vessel operating nearby, to assist with locating the sunken ship, its crew or any liferafts in the vicinity.
MT Aisopos subsequently recovered two survivors from separate liferafts at around 8 pm, providing an immediate boost to the ongoing rescue effort. Authorities continued searching for the remaining crew members following the recovery.
MV Ocean Winner had been transporting approximately 72,100 metric tonnes of iron ore fines from Odisha. The vessel had departed from the Paradip coast at 10.42 pm on August 20, according to officials. While the cargo was reportedly being transported from Paradip towards China, the vessel was headed for Singapore.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the risks associated with bulk cargo movements in the Bay of Bengal, where commercial vessels operate across busy maritime routes connecting Indian ports with international destinations.
The Coast Guard and other agencies are continuing operations to locate additional survivors and determine the circumstances surrounding the vessel’s sinking. The involvement of nearby commercial shipping assets is also helping expand the search area and provide assistance while dedicated rescue resources remain engaged.
The authorities are expected to establish further details about the vessel’s condition, the sequence of events preceding the sinking and the status of all crew members as the operation progresses.
For now, the priority remains locating the 22 people still unaccounted for after the rescue of the two survivors. The Coast Guard’s continued deployment, along with assistance from vessels operating in the vicinity, is expected to remain central to the effort to find additional crew members and provide emergency support.
