Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has reviewed preparations to start commercial civil flight operations from Thoise Airport in Nubra Valley and Kargil Airport. The review meeting with the Ministry of Defence, Indian Air Force, Airports Authority of India and Ladakh Administration focused on infrastructure, regulatory and operational requirements. The Indian Air Force has approved five acres for a new civil terminal at Thoise, where runway recarpeting is underway and civil operations are targeted to begin by December from a refurbished chartered flight terminal. A joint inspection of Kargil Airport is scheduled for September 1 to assess its readiness.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has reviewed preparations for the operationalisation of commercial civil flights from Thoise Airport in Nubra Valley and Kargil Airport, with the administration seeking to resolve infrastructure, regulatory and operational issues at both airports.
Saxena chaired the meeting in New Delhi with officials from the Ministry of Defence, Indian Air Force, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Ladakh Administration. The meeting focused on completing the required arrangements within a defined timeline so that civilian flight operations can begin at the two strategically and economically important airports.
The Indian Air Force has approved five acres of land for construction of a new civil terminal at Thoise. Runway recarpeting work is also underway and is targeted for completion by November.
The administration is targeting the start of civil operations from Thoise by December using the existing chartered flight terminal after it is refurbished. Saxena has asked AAI to submit the required infrastructure details to the UT Administration, following which the Public Works Department will undertake the necessary refurbishment work.
Commercial flights from Thoise are expected to improve air access for residents of Nubra Valley and visitors travelling to destinations such as Turtuk and the Siachen area. The improved connectivity is also expected to support tourism and economic activity in the region.
For Kargil Airport, a joint inspection involving the Indian Air Force, AAI and the Ministry of Civil Aviation will be conducted on September 1 in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor. The inspection will assess the existing infrastructure, technical requirements and other factors needed to determine the next steps for starting civilian flight operations.
Saxena has directed all concerned agencies to coordinate and complete the infrastructure, regulatory and operational requirements at the earliest. Civilian air connectivity to Kargil has remained a priority because of the region's difficult terrain and prolonged winters.
The proposed operations from Thoise and Kargil are also expected to improve access to Ladakh's border areas and support tourism destinations including Kargil, Drass, Turtuk and the Siachen Base Camp. The administration said the initiative is aligned with the broader objective of improving regional connectivity and supporting development in remote parts of Ladakh.
