Passengers travelling abroad from Indian airports will no longer need to carry a physical boarding pass for immigration stamping from September 1. The Bureau of Immigration under the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed airport authorities to stop stamping boarding passes at immigration counters across all international airports. Passengers will instead be required to show an e-boarding pass on their smartphones for immigration clearance. The decision follows complaints that physical stamping was causing inconvenience and leading to errors when boarding passes were stamped incorrectly or could not be read properly.
Passengers flying abroad from Indian airports will no longer be required to carry a physical boarding pass for immigration stamping from September 1, following a decision by the Bureau of Immigration (BOI) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
International travellers will instead be required to show an e-boarding pass on their smartphones during immigration clearance. The BOI has communicated the directive to airport authorities after finding that physical stamping was causing inconvenience to passengers.
Officials said cases of boarding passes being difficult to read because of improper or incorrect stamping had also been reported. The BOI has therefore decided to end the mandatory requirement for physical boarding passes and stamping at immigration counters at all international airports in the country.
Physical boarding passes will continue to be accepted after September 1, but immigration authorities will no longer stamp them.
Security officials clarified that boarding passes of international passengers are not stamped by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) during individual frisking. The document is required to be produced for immigration clearance. CISF stopped stamping boarding passes for both domestic and international passengers several years ago.
The BOI is also planning to discontinue the stamping of immigration entry and exit on passports for Indian passport holders. A pilot exercise for this measure is expected to be completed before the system is operationalised across airports in the country.
