The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Road Safety Board discussed measures to strengthen road safety governance, improve safety standards on National Highways and reduce accidents. The meeting reviewed the existing road safety management system, including highway engineering, operations, safety audits and black spot management. The two institutions also examined current institutional arrangements and identified areas where a safe system approach could further improve road safety. The proposed approach covers risk identification, highway engineering and operations, commercial vehicle safety, emergency response, digital monitoring, governance and a long-term road safety strategy.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Road Safety Board held discussions on strengthening road safety governance and improving safety standards on National Highways. The meeting also focused on accelerating measures to reduce accidents on the highway network.
NHAI presented an overview of the current road safety management system on National Highways, covering road safety performance and emerging trends, institutional arrangements and governance, highway safety engineering and operations, along with road safety audits and black spot management.
The discussions examined existing institutional arrangements, engineering practices and operational systems and looked at ways to strengthen road safety through the adoption of a safe system approach.
The approach will focus on six key areas, including risk identification, safe highway engineering and accident prevention; safe highway operations, commercial vehicle safety and intelligent transport systems; and emergency response, incident management and citizen-focused safety.
Other areas include digital safety management, monitoring and decision-support systems, performance monitoring, governance and institutional accountability. The institutions also discussed the need for a strategic roadmap for road safety on National Highways.
NHAI and the National Road Safety Board will continue their engagement through periodic review meetings to assess emerging challenges and strengthen road safety measures across the National Highway network.
