The Centre has approved the expansion of Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University (RGNAU) at Fursatganj in Amethi over an additional 500 acres and has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to make the land available. The university plans to develop a centre of excellence with advanced laboratories, research centres and other infrastructure for aviation, aerospace and allied fields. A land survey is underway, and the state government is expected to make the required land available soon. RGNAU is also targeting an increase in student strength from the current 595 to 17,000 by 2033.
The Centre has approved a proposal by Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University to expand its aerospace activities over an additional 500 acres at Fursatganj in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. The Union government has directed the state government to make the required land available for the expansion.
RGNAU Vice Chancellor B N Singh said the Centre had approved the university’s proposal and sent it to the Uttar Pradesh government for providing the 500 acres. A survey to identify and make the land available is currently underway. Singh also said he had met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who assured him that the land would be made available soon.
The additional land will be used to develop a centre of excellence along with advanced laboratories, research centres and other infrastructure. The proposed facilities will focus on higher education, research and innovation in aviation, aerospace and related fields.
The university has prepared a development plan to increase its student strength to 17,000 by 2033. At present, 595 students are enrolled at the autonomous Central university. The expansion is expected to provide the infrastructure required to support the proposed increase in student capacity.
RGNAU is also working on plans to grant affiliation to institutions across the country, according to the vice chancellor. Established in 2013 under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the university is the country's only university dedicated specifically to aviation and aerospace education.
The proposed expansion will add to the university's existing campus and is aimed at creating facilities for specialised aviation and aerospace education and research. The immediate requirement is the identification and transfer of the additional land by the Uttar Pradesh government, following which the planned centre and other facilities can be taken forward.
