The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has signed concession agreements for two sewage treatment plant projects in Uttar Pradesh, covering Varanasi and Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar. The projects include a 60 million litres per day (MLD) STP at Lohta in Varanasi and a 45 MLD STP at Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar. The plants will intercept untreated sewage entering the Varuna River and the Ganga through local drains. Both projects will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity-based Public-Private Partnership model, with Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural) as the executing agency.
The National Mission for Clean Ganga has signed concession agreements for two new sewage treatment plant projects in Uttar Pradesh to improve wastewater management in Varanasi and Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar. The agreements cover a 60 MLD STP at Lohta in Varanasi and a 45 MLD STP at Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar.
The Lohta STP will intercept and treat untreated sewage flowing through the Durga Drain into the Varuna River. The Varuna eventually joins the Ganga near Adi Keshav Ghat, making the project relevant to reducing sewage discharge into the river system.
The 45 MLD plant at Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar will address untreated sewage entering the Ganga through Railway Nala and Ganda Nala. According to the NMCG, the project will provide adequate sewage treatment capacity for the town and enable all drains emerging from the area to be intercepted.
Both projects will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity-based Public-Private Partnership model. Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural) will execute the projects, while Varanasi Lohta STP Pvt Ltd and Varanasi DDU Nagar STP Pvt Ltd have been appointed as concessionaires for the two plants, respectively.
The Lohta project will also include 15 years of operation and maintenance. The concession agreements were signed by officials from Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural) and the NMCG, along with representatives of the two concessionaire companies. NMCG Director General Rajeev Kumar Mital was present during the signing.
Mital said the projects would help reduce pollution loads, improve water quality and strengthen sewage treatment infrastructure in the two locations. He also asked the executing agency and concessionaires to complete the projects ahead of their scheduled completion timelines.
The two projects form part of the wider effort under the NMCG to intercept untreated sewage before it reaches the Ganga and its tributaries. By increasing treatment capacity and covering drains that currently carry untreated wastewater, the projects are expected to improve the quality of water entering the river system.
