Synopsis

The West Bengal government has released the second instalment of financial assistance to more than 10.20 lakh beneficiaries under its renamed rural housing scheme, Paschim Banga Awas. Around INR 6,122 crore has been transferred directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism to support house construction. The scheme, previously known as Banglar Bari, has been renamed following a fresh verification of beneficiaries. Each eligible family will receive a total financial assistance of INR 1.20 lakh, with the current instalment released only to those who have completed construction up to the lintel level. The state government has said the remaining eligible beneficiaries will receive assistance after completing the required construction stage and undergoing field verification.

The West Bengal government has transferred financial assistance to more than 10.20 lakh rural housing beneficiaries under the newly renamed Paschim Banga Awas scheme, marking the release of the second instalment of support for eligible families constructing permanent houses. The funds were disbursed through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system to ensure direct credit into beneficiaries' bank accounts.
The housing programme, formerly known as Banglar Bari, has been renamed Paschim Banga Awas following a decision by the state government. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari formally launched the fund transfer programme and announced that the revised name would be used for all future implementation of the scheme.
Under the scheme, each beneficiary is entitled to receive INR 1.20 lakh in financial assistance for constructing a house. The current instalment of INR 60,000 has been released only to beneficiaries who completed construction up to the lintel level using the first instalment. State officials said the phased release was intended to ensure that financial assistance reaches genuine beneficiaries in accordance with the scheme's eligibility criteria.
Government officials stated that the beneficiaries receiving the latest instalment are among approximately 18 lakh families identified under the housing programme. A detailed verification exercise conducted by the state administration found that around 10 lakh families had completed the prescribed stage of construction, making them eligible for the second instalment.
Officials clarified that beneficiaries who have not yet completed construction up to the required stage have not been excluded from the programme. Once they reach the prescribed construction milestone, another round of field verification will be undertaken before the next instalment is released.
The state government also indicated that additional financial assistance would be released for newly identified beneficiaries after Durga Puja, subject to verification and the availability of funds. It reiterated that the objective of the programme is to ensure that all eligible rural families receive support for building permanent homes without discrimination.
