The Maharashtra government has asked officials to speed up the second phase of the Karanja Fishing Harbour project in Raigad by deploying experienced technical staff and modern equipment. The project aims to strengthen fishing infrastructure, improve operational facilities and benefit around 6,600 fishermen. While the first phase has largely been completed by the Maharashtra Maritime Board, the proposal for the second phase is under review after the government sought revisions. Once completed, the expanded harbour will increase operational capacity and provide several new facilities for the fishing community.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to deploy experienced technical personnel and modern equipment to accelerate the remaining work under the second phase of the Karanja Fishing Harbour project in Raigad district. The direction was issued during a meeting of the Expenditure Priority Committee, where the progress of the project was reviewed.
Spread across 5.23 hectares, the Karanja Fishing Harbour is designed to handle around 4,500 tonnes of fish annually and is expected to benefit nearly 6,600 fishermen by providing improved fishing and post-harvest infrastructure.
The first phase of the project, approved at a cost of INR 149 crore, has already been completed by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). According to officials, 13 of the 24 works sanctioned under this phase have been completed.
Out of the INR 136.39 crore released for the project so far, the Maharashtra government has contributed INR 74.90 crore. The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has provided INR 14 crore, while the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has contributed INR 60.90 crore towards the project.
A proposal worth INR 151.29 crore has been submitted for the second phase of the harbour. However, the state government has sought certain revisions to the proposal before granting its approval.
The second phase includes the construction of an additional 370-metre quay wall, widening of the navigation channel, expansion of boat parking facilities, development of fish auction halls, gear and net repair sheds, a fisheries administration office, a fishermen's rest house, a restaurant, a radio communication station, a guard house and other supporting infrastructure.
The Karanja Fishing Harbour project is part of the state's efforts to strengthen coastal and fisheries infrastructure. Improved harbour facilities are expected to support smoother fish landing operations, enhance storage and handling capacity, and provide better working conditions for the local fishing community while improving overall efficiency in the fisheries sector.
