Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), part of the Tata Group, has signed a 46-key Tree of Life resort in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. The project is being developed as a greenfield resort and is aimed at strengthening the company's presence in emerging leisure destinations across India.
Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate & Development at IHCL, said the company has seen increasing interest in heritage-focused and experiential travel, with Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu's Chettinad region attracting a wide range of leisure travellers and cultural enthusiasts. She added that the new Tree of Life resort is in line with IHCL's strategy of expanding into emerging leisure markets while offering experiences that reflect the local culture. She also said the company was pleased to continue its long-standing partnership with the AMPA Group.
The Chettinad region is known for its distinctive architecture, heritage mansions, traditional cuisine and cultural legacy, making it one of Tamil Nadu's important tourism destinations. In recent years, hospitality companies have increasingly focused on heritage locations as demand for experiential and culture-led travel continues to grow.
With this signing, IHCL's portfolio in Tamil Nadu will increase to 33 hotels, including 14 properties that are currently under development. The company has been steadily expanding its presence across key business, leisure and spiritual destinations through brands such as Taj, SeleQtions, Vivanta, Ginger and Tree of Life. The latest addition further supports its long-term expansion strategy across high-growth domestic tourism markets.
In a separate development, IHG Hotels & Resorts announced the opening of its first Vignette Collection branded property in India and South West Asia. The 145-room The Aarlis Hotel in Panchkula, Haryana, marks the debut of the luxury collection brand in the region.
Sudeep Jain, Managing Director, IHG Hotels & Resorts, South West Asia, said the opening of The Aarlis Hotel represents an important milestone for both the Vignette Collection brand and IHG's operations in India. He added that the launch reflects the company's plans to introduce distinctive, character-led hospitality experiences in one of the world's fastest-growing luxury and lifestyle hospitality markets.
Vignette Collection is IHG's luxury and lifestyle brand that brings together independent hotels while allowing each property to retain its individual identity. The brand has been expanding globally as IHG strengthens its premium hospitality offerings in key international markets.
IHG Hotels & Resorts currently operates more than 7,000 hotels worldwide across 21 brands. In India, its portfolio includes established brands such as Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, along with other international hospitality brands catering to different market segments.
