JPMorgan to deploy USD 750 billion for US housing initiatives through 2035

Synopsis

JPMorgan has announced plans to deploy more than USD 750 billion towards housing initiatives in the United States through 2035 under its American Dream Initiative. The programme aims to increase housing supply, expand homeownership and support affordable housing development. The bank plans to increase mortgage lending by more than 40%, helping around 500,000 customers purchase homes, while supporting the production and preservation of over one million affordable housing units. The initiative also includes expanding its home lending workforce and participating in housing policy discussions, as the US housing market continues to face supply shortages, elevated borrowing costs and high home prices.

JPMorgan has announced plans to deploy more than USD 750 billion towards housing initiatives across the United States through 2035 as part of its American Dream Initiative, a long-term programme aimed at increasing housing supply, expanding homeownership and supporting affordable housing development.
The investment commitment, announced earlier this week, forms part of the broader American Dream Initiative unveiled by the bank earlier this year. In addition to housing, the programme seeks to promote local economic growth through increased lending to small businesses and wider access to healthcare services.
Under the housing initiative, JPMorgan plans to increase its mortgage lending by more than 40%, with the objective of helping approximately 500,000 customers purchase homes over the coming years. The bank also intends to support the production and preservation of more than one million affordable housing units across the country.
According to the bank, the planned deployment represents an increase of nearly 40% in housing-related capital compared with the amount deployed during the previous decade. Alongside financing activities, JPMorgan said it would advocate for policies that encourage residential development to help address supply constraints.
The announcement comes at a time when the US housing market continues to experience subdued activity. Elevated borrowing costs, combined with persistent housing shortages and high property prices, have reduced affordability and kept many prospective homebuyers out of the market.
As part of the initiative, JPMorgan will join the newly established Housing Advisory Council of the US Chamber of Commerce, where it will serve as chair. The bank also plans to recruit 850 additional home lending advisers to expand its residential mortgage operations and improve customer access to financing.
Michelle Herrick, Head of Commercial Real Estate at JPMorgan, said an affordable and resilient housing market was essential for supporting economic growth and expanding opportunities for households and communities.
JPMorgan, the largest bank in the United States by assets and market capitalisation, has already expanded its mortgage business in recent years. The bank originated USD 52.8 billion in home loans during the previous year, representing an increase of nearly 30% compared with 2024.
The latest commitment reflects the bank's increased focus on housing finance and affordable housing as policymakers and financial institutions continue to seek measures to improve housing availability and affordability across the United States.
