Coral Beach Resort Sharjah has commissioned a biodigester system, becoming the first hotel in Sharjah to operate the technology for on-site food waste processing. The system converts organic kitchen waste into greywater using natural microorganisms and oxygen, reducing landfill waste, methane emissions and waste transportation requirements. The treated water is reused for landscape irrigation as part of the resort's water conservation programme. The initiative aligns with the Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority's Food Waste Carbon Pilot Implementation and forms part of the resort's wider sustainability strategy, which also includes water conservation, waste reduction and the elimination of single-use plastic bottles through an on-site water bottling plant.
Coral Beach Resort Sharjah has commissioned a biodigester system for on-site food waste management, becoming the first hotel in the Emirate of Sharjah to operate the technology. The installation forms part of the resort's environmental sustainability programme and supports wider efforts to reduce food waste within the hospitality sector.
According to the resort, the biodigester uses natural microorganisms and oxygen to process organic kitchen waste, converting it into greywater. Processing waste on-site reduces the quantity of food waste sent to landfill, lowering methane emissions associated with organic waste decomposition and reducing emissions generated through waste collection and transportation.
The greywater produced through the treatment process is reused for irrigating the resort's landscaped gardens and green spaces. The system is intended to create a closed-loop process that combines waste management with water conservation.
The project has been implemented as part of the Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority's Food Waste Carbon Pilot Implementation, which seeks to reduce food waste and lower the environmental impact of the hospitality sector. The initiative also supports Sharjah's broader objective of promoting sustainable tourism practices.
The biodigester adds to a series of sustainability measures introduced by Coral Beach Resort Sharjah. These include the establishment of an on-site water bottling plant, which the resort states was the first of its kind in the Northern Emirates and was introduced to reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles. The property has also implemented the Coralganic organic garden, alongside energy conservation, water management and waste reduction programmes.
Commenting on the initiative, Iftikhar Hamdani, Area General Manager of Coral Beach Resort Sharjah, said the commissioning of the biodigester represented the implementation of a practical sustainability solution rather than simply the installation of new equipment. He stated that sustainability remains embedded within the resort's operations and that the property would continue investing in technologies aimed at reducing its environmental impact.
The resort's sustainability initiatives have previously received industry recognition. Coral Beach Resort Sharjah was awarded the Sustain Sharjah Award at the Sharjah International Travel & Tourism Forum Awards 2025 by the Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority.
With the biodigester now operational, the resort has introduced an additional measure to support waste reduction and resource efficiency, while contributing to broader sustainability objectives within Sharjah's hospitality industry.
