The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has disconnected water and sewerage connections to several buildings classified as C1, the highest-risk category of dangerous structures, as part of efforts to prevent accidents during the monsoon. Acting on directions from Maharashtra Chief Minister and Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Rahul Gethe led inspections across Belapur, Nerul, Vashi and Koparkhairane. The civic body had earlier appealed to residents to vacate these buildings owing to their unsafe condition. The latest action is intended to ensure that habitation ceases in these structures and to safeguard public safety during the ongoing monsoon season.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has disconnected water supply and sewerage connections to several buildings categorised as C1, the highest-risk classification for dangerous structures, in an effort to prevent accidents during the monsoon. The action follows earlier appeals by the civic body asking residents to vacate these buildings because of their unsafe condition.
According to the municipal corporation, the inspections and enforcement drive were carried out in accordance with the directions of Maharashtra Chief Minister and under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Rahul Gethe led the inspection along with Deputy Commissioner (Zone 1) Dr Amol Palve, Deputy Commissioner (Zone 2) Sanjay Shinde and other civic officials.
During the inspection, officials reviewed the condition of C1-category buildings across the NMMC jurisdiction and ordered the disconnection of water supply and sewerage lines to prevent further occupation of structures considered unsafe for habitation.
The buildings where civic services have been disconnected include White House Co-operative Housing Society Ltd in Sector 21, Nerul (East), under the Belapur division.
In the Nerul division, the action covered Shivneri Co-operative Housing Society Ltd, comprising Buildings 1, 2 and 3 at NL-5, Plot No. 1, Sector 3.
Under the Vashi division, water and sewerage connections were disconnected at Little Flower Co-operative Housing Society Ltd (Building No. 9), Sector 9; Noor Co-operative Housing Society Ltd, Plot No. 18, Sector 9A; C1 and C2 Type Buildings 1 to 12 in Sector 2; and Sumangal Apartment, B-3 (ii) Type Owners Association in Sector 3.
In the Koparkhairane division, the civic action covered Gagangiri Co-operative Housing Society Ltd, Condominium No. 2, C-Type Buildings 1 to 13 in Sector 9; Silver Nest Co-operative Housing Society Ltd in Sector 15; and Raj Palace Co-operative Housing Society Ltd, Plot No. 16, Sector 2.
The inspection was attended by Additional City Engineer Madan Waghchaure, assistant commissioners, ward officers, officials from the encroachment department, executive engineers, deputy engineers and other municipal personnel.
NMMC stated that the measure forms part of its monsoon safety programme aimed at preventing loss of life and property by ensuring that buildings declared highly dangerous remain unoccupied until appropriate action is taken.
