The project also proposes preserving thousands of existing trees and expanding public amenities, reflecting a planning approach that combines housing redevelopment with improved environmental and community infrastructure.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is set to introduce a 3.3-km public promenade along the Mithi River, adding a major waterfront component to the comprehensive transformation of one of Mumbai's largest informal settlements. The riverfront proposal forms part of the project's master plan, which aims to combine residential redevelopment with improved public infrastructure, environmental conservation and enhanced quality of life.
The proposed promenade will include dedicated pedestrian pathways, cycling tracks, landscaped gardens, seating areas and recreational spaces that will provide residents with direct access to the riverfront. The objective is to create an accessible public space while improving the visual and environmental character of the Mithi River corridor.
Environmental sustainability has been incorporated into the planning framework through the preservation of nearly 40,000 trees within the redevelopment area. In addition to retaining existing green cover wherever feasible, the project proposes further landscaping and the creation of open spaces that can contribute to improved biodiversity, urban cooling and better public health outcomes.
The riverfront development is expected to complement the broader redevelopment programme, which includes modern residential buildings, upgraded civic infrastructure, improved road connectivity, commercial spaces and community facilities. By integrating public open spaces with housing and transport infrastructure, the project seeks to create a more organised and liveable urban environment.
The Mithi River has historically faced challenges such as encroachments, pollution and flooding. While the redevelopment project primarily focuses on urban renewal, the creation of a managed riverfront is expected to support ongoing efforts to improve the river's ecological condition and enhance accessibility without compromising environmental considerations.
Urban planners increasingly recognise waterfront development as an important element of city regeneration projects. Public promenades can improve connectivity, encourage walking and cycling, create recreational opportunities and strengthen the relationship between residents and natural water bodies, particularly in densely populated urban areas where open spaces are limited.
Once implemented, the Mithi River promenade is expected to become one of the defining features of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, demonstrating how large-scale housing redevelopment can be integrated with environmental improvement and public realm enhancement. The initiative reflects a broader shift towards creating urban neighbourhoods that balance infrastructure development with sustainability and community-focused public spaces.
