The Nashik Kumbh Mela Authority has approved an INR 56 crore project to construct a parallel road along the busy Gangapur Road corridor, aiming to reduce traffic congestion ahead of the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The new road is expected to improve connectivity to key residential and pilgrimage areas while easing traffic pressure on one of the city's busiest arterial routes. The project forms part of a broader infrastructure development programme being undertaken to prepare Nashik for the large influx of pilgrims and visitors during the religious gathering.
The Nashik Kumbh Mela Authority has sanctioned an INR 56 crore project to develop a parallel road alongside the city's heavily used Gangapur Road, as part of infrastructure upgrades being undertaken ahead of the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The project is intended to improve traffic movement in western Nashik and strengthen the city's transport network before the large-scale religious event.
Gangapur Road serves as one of Nashik's principal arterial corridors, connecting residential neighbourhoods, educational institutions, commercial establishments and important religious destinations. Rapid urban growth over the years has led to increased traffic volumes on the route, resulting in frequent congestion, particularly during peak hours.
The proposed parallel road is expected to distribute vehicular traffic more evenly by providing an alternative route for commuters. Civic authorities believe the additional corridor will help reduce travel time, improve accessibility to adjoining areas and enhance the overall efficiency of the city's road network.
The project has been approved as part of the Kumbh Mela infrastructure programme, under which several transport and civic works are being planned to accommodate the significant increase in visitors expected during the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh. The religious gathering is projected to attract millions of pilgrims from across India and abroad, requiring substantial upgrades to roads, public utilities and urban infrastructure.
Officials have indicated that improving road connectivity is a key component of Nashik's preparations for the event. Besides facilitating pilgrim movement, the new road is expected to deliver long-term benefits to local residents by easing daily traffic congestion and supporting future urban expansion in the area.
The parallel road proposal complements a series of infrastructure initiatives already approved for the city, including major road improvement works, junction upgrades and ring road development aimed at strengthening regional connectivity. These projects are expected to enhance mobility while supporting Nashik's growing population and expanding economic activity.
Once completed, the new corridor is expected to serve both the immediate transportation needs of the 2027 Kumbh Mela and the city's long-term urban development objectives. Authorities believe the investment will improve traffic management, reduce pressure on existing road infrastructure and contribute to a more efficient and resilient transport network for Nashik.
