The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated legal action against two housing societies in Mumbai for allegedly violating tree protection norms. One society is accused of damaging trees by using harmful substances, while another allegedly carried out excessive pruning without obtaining mandatory civic approval. The action highlights the civic body's stricter enforcement of regulations governing tree preservation, as authorities seek to safeguard Mumbai's urban green cover and promote scientific tree maintenance amid growing environmental and public safety concerns.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated legal proceedings against two housing societies in separate cases involving alleged violations of tree protection regulations. The action forms part of the civic body's ongoing efforts to strengthen enforcement against activities that damage or endanger trees across the city.
According to civic officials, one housing society allegedly caused damage to several trees by using substances believed to have adversely affected their health. In another case, a separate housing society is accused of carrying out extensive pruning beyond the permissible limit and without obtaining the necessary permission from the municipal authorities.
Following inspections by officials from the civic body's Tree Authority, both cases were found to involve suspected breaches of provisions governing the protection and maintenance of trees. Based on these findings, the BMC has initiated legal action under the applicable regulations.
The municipal administration has reiterated that residents, housing societies and property managers must obtain prior approval before undertaking any significant pruning, cutting or removal of trees. Routine maintenance is permitted only within prescribed limits and must follow technical guidelines intended to ensure the long-term health and structural stability of trees.
Civic officials said indiscriminate pruning or deliberate damage can weaken trees, reduce their ecological value and increase the risk of instability during adverse weather conditions. Scientific tree maintenance, they noted, remains essential for balancing public safety with environmental conservation.
The action comes as Mumbai continues to place greater emphasis on protecting its urban green cover amid rapid urbanisation and infrastructure expansion. Mature trees play a critical role in reducing heat, improving air quality, supporting biodiversity and managing stormwater, making their preservation an important aspect of sustainable city planning.
The BMC has indicated that inspections and enforcement drives will continue across the city to ensure compliance with tree protection norms. Officials have urged housing societies and private property owners to follow prescribed procedures for tree maintenance, warning that violations could invite legal proceedings and other regulatory action.
