The Amarnath Yatra was suspended from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu after persistent rainfall disrupted restoration work on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), the pilgrimage's primary road link to Kashmir. Authorities halted the movement of fresh batches of pilgrims for the second consecutive day as repair work continued on the landslide-affected Ladha–Samroli stretch in Udhampur district. Continuous rainfall left sections of the highway muddy and slippery, preventing safe passage. Meanwhile, the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB) shifted its registration and token distribution facilities from the Tawi Riverfront to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp. Around 4.5 lakh pilgrims have undertaken the pilgrimage so far, which is scheduled to conclude on 28 August.
The annual Amarnath Yatra was suspended from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu after fresh rainfall hampered restoration work on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), prompting authorities to halt the movement of pilgrims for the second consecutive day.
Officials said no fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed to leave the Jammu base camp for the Kashmir Valley as repair work continued on the landslide-affected Ladha–Samroli stretch in Udhampur district. The suspension follows continued disruption along the 250-km Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, the principal road corridor connecting Jammu with the Kashmir Valley and the primary route used by Amarnath pilgrims.
Traffic on both carriageways of NH-44 had been suspended recently after the passage of the Amarnath Yatra convoy to facilitate restoration work on road sections damaged by heavy rainfall. The highway serves as the only all-weather road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, making its restoration a priority for both pilgrimage movement and general traffic.
According to officials, fresh spells of rain further complicated repair efforts by leaving the road surface slushy, muddy and extremely slippery. Light to moderate rainfall was reported across parts of Ramban and Udhampur districts, affecting the pace of restoration work and delaying the reopening of the highway for traffic.
Separately, the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB) has relocated its Yatra registration and token distribution counters from the Tawi Riverfront to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. The decision follows a decline in the number of pilgrims arriving in the city as the annual pilgrimage enters its concluding phase.
The Tawi Riverfront facility had been established as a centralised centre for offline registration, token distribution, electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) card issuance for Amarnath pilgrims. With the number of new registrations tapering, these services have now been consolidated at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp, officials said.
The Amarnath Yatra commenced on 3 July, and approximately 4.5 lakh devotees have visited the cave shrine, which houses the naturally formed ice lingam in the south Kashmir Himalayas. The pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on 28 August, coinciding with the festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and the progress of highway restoration before permitting the movement of fresh Yatra convoys towards the Kashmir Valley. The reopening of NH-44 will depend on the completion of repair works and the restoration of safe travelling conditions along the affected sections of the route.
