NH-48's Gurugram–Jaipur stretch goes barrier-free with MLFF tolling from August 1

Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has operationalised the country's first fully barrier-less tolling corridor on the Gurugram–Jaipur stretch of NH-48 under the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection system. Effective from August 1, 2026, all toll plazas on the corridor have transitioned to the technology-driven system, enabling uninterrupted vehicle movement through FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). The initiative aims to reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency, strengthen toll compliance and support India's next phase of intelligent highway infrastructure.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has operationalised the country's first fully barrier-less tolling corridor on the Gurugram–Jaipur section of National Highway-48, marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of India's highway network. Effective from August 1, 2026, every toll plaza along the corridor has transitioned to the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection system, allowing vehicles to travel without stopping at conventional toll barriers. 
The implementation transforms the entire Gurugram–Jaipur corridor into a seamless tolling route where physical boom barriers have been removed. Instead of stopping at toll plazas, vehicles will be identified using a combination of FASTag-enabled Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed across the corridor. The system automatically detects vehicles, verifies their identity and processes toll payments electronically while traffic continues to move uninterrupted. 
According to NHAI, the transition to MLFF is expected to substantially reduce congestion that typically builds up near toll plazas, particularly during peak travel hours. By eliminating the need for vehicles to slow down or halt for toll payment, the Authority expects shorter travel times, lower fuel consumption and reduced vehicular emissions. The initiative is also expected to improve overall highway efficiency by ensuring smoother movement of passenger and commercial traffic on one of northern India's busiest transport corridors. 
To strengthen compliance, the MLFF system has been integrated with an automated enforcement mechanism. Vehicles without valid FASTags or those that fail to comply with toll payment requirements will be identified through ANPR technology, enabling authorities to initiate enforcement measures under the applicable legal provisions. This integrated approach is intended to minimise toll evasion while maintaining transparency and accuracy in toll collection. 
The Gurugram–Jaipur corridor was selected for implementation because of its strategic importance within the National Highway network. The route serves as a major connectivity link between the National Capital Region and Rajasthan while carrying a significant volume of freight vehicles, long-distance passenger traffic and commercial transport every day. The successful deployment of MLFF on this corridor is expected to serve as a benchmark for future barrier-less tolling projects across the country. 
NHAI has stated that the project forms part of the Government of India's broader effort to modernise highway infrastructure through digital technologies and intelligent transport systems. The introduction of corridor-wide MLFF is expected to improve user convenience while supporting more efficient highway operations and better utilisation of transport infrastructure. 
The Authority also believes that uninterrupted vehicle movement will contribute to lower logistics costs, particularly for commercial transport operators who regularly use the corridor. Reduced idling time at toll locations is expected to improve operational efficiency for freight movement while supporting environmental objectives through lower fuel consumption and emissions. 
With the Gurugram–Jaipur stretch becoming fully barrier-less from August 1, India has taken a major step towards the next generation of highway tolling. The successful implementation of MLFF across the entire corridor is expected to guide the phased rollout of similar technology-driven toll collection systems on other national highways, paving the way for faster, safer and more efficient road travel nationwide.
