The Odisha government has placed its flood management machinery on high alert as the Mahanadi river system is expected to witness a medium flood following heavy inflows from upstream catchment areas. Authorities have activated emergency response measures, mobilised rescue teams and directed district administrations to closely monitor vulnerable locations. The state is also coordinating reservoir management and relief operations to minimise the impact on people living in low-lying areas along the Mahanadi basin.
The Odisha government has intensified its flood preparedness measures after forecasting a medium flood in the Mahanadi river system, prompting authorities to place vulnerable districts on high alert. The warning comes as heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas has resulted in rising inflows into the state's river network, with officials anticipating the season's largest discharge through the Mahanadi over the coming days.
State authorities have directed district administrations situated along the downstream reaches of the river to remain fully prepared for any deterioration in the flood situation. Officials have been instructed to closely monitor embankments, identify vulnerable pockets and ensure that rescue equipment, relief materials and emergency response teams are positioned for immediate deployment wherever required.
According to the state government, multiple departments, including the Water Resources Department, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), Fire Services and district administrations, have been placed on alert to coordinate flood response activities. Continuous monitoring of river levels and water releases from reservoirs is also being undertaken to facilitate timely decisions and minimise risks to life and property.
The anticipated increase in water levels follows sustained rainfall across upstream regions feeding the Mahanadi basin. Authorities are closely tracking the flow of water into Odisha and assessing its likely impact on downstream districts, particularly those located in low-lying coastal areas that are traditionally vulnerable during periods of high river discharge.
As part of the preparedness exercise, district collectors have been asked to keep evacuation plans ready wherever necessary and ensure that temporary shelters and relief centres remain operational. Officials have also been directed to maintain adequate stocks of food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies to support affected communities if floodwaters enter residential areas.
The government has appealed to residents living near riverbanks and flood-prone locations to remain vigilant and follow advisories issued by local authorities. People have been advised to avoid entering swollen rivers, stay away from weak embankments and cooperate with evacuation efforts should conditions require precautionary relocation. Officials have emphasised that early preparedness remains the most effective means of reducing the impact of flooding.
The flood alert comes even as several parts of Odisha continue to recover from recent monsoon-related flooding that affected thousands of people across multiple districts. With fresh inflows expected into the Mahanadi system, authorities are attempting to prevent further disruption through continuous surveillance and coordinated disaster management measures.
Officials have stressed that the situation is being reviewed on a real-time basis and that emergency response agencies will remain on standby until river levels stabilise. The government has reiterated that protecting lives and minimising damage to property remain its highest priorities, with all concerned departments instructed to respond promptly to any emerging situation.
The latest alert highlights Odisha's continued focus on proactive flood management during the monsoon season. By strengthening coordination among government agencies, maintaining constant surveillance of river conditions and preparing emergency response systems in advance, the state aims to reduce the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities across the Mahanadi basin.
