The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a nationwide initiative to upgrade public toilet facilities at toll plazas across the National Highway network. The programme aims to improve commuter convenience by renovating existing sanitation blocks and building new ones using standardised indigenous designs with sustainable infrastructure. The initiative also introduces a performance-based maintenance model supported by Internet of Things (IoT)-based live monitoring systems to ensure high standards of cleanliness, functionality and long-term upkeep of the facilities.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a nationwide initiative to develop world-class public toilet facilities at toll plazas across the National Highway network. The move is aimed at improving commuter convenience by providing cleaner, safer and better-maintained public sanitation facilities for highway users.
According to a statement issued by NHAI, the initiative will upgrade sanitation infrastructure at toll plazas through a performance-based contract framework. The model has been designed to ensure that toilet facilities are maintained to high standards of cleanliness, functionality and long-term operational efficiency instead of focusing only on construction.
As part of the programme, NHAI will renovate existing toilet blocks while also constructing new facilities wherever required. The upgraded amenities will follow standardised designs developed within the country and will incorporate durable structural features along with sustainable and green building practices. The objective is to create uniform, high-quality sanitation facilities across the National Highway network.
The authority said the improved facilities are intended to offer clean, safe and accessible public amenities for commuters travelling on highways. Standardising the design and maintenance process is also expected to ensure a consistent user experience at toll plazas across different regions.
To support long-term upkeep, NHAI has adopted a technology-driven maintenance framework under which the facilities will be operated and monitored. The operational model includes Internet of Things (IoT)-based live telemetry systems that will enable real-time monitoring of key maintenance parameters. This will help authorities identify maintenance requirements promptly, improve service delivery and ensure regular upkeep of the sanitation blocks.
The initiative forms part of NHAI's broader efforts to improve highway user amenities. Over the past few years, the authority has been expanding wayside facilities and introducing technology-driven systems to enhance commuter experience, alongside its focus on expanding and modernising India's National Highway infrastructure.
