Maharashtra has approved the construction of 1,60,463 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0 after more than 4.21 lakh beneficiaries registered on the unified web portal. During a review meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed implementing agencies to speed up project execution while maintaining quality standards. The state also reviewed its housing stock management strategy and the proposed Housing Stock Portal, which aims to integrate available housing across multiple agencies and improve allotment for eligible beneficiaries, including several special categories.
The Maharashtra government has approved the construction of 1,60,463 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0 after 4,21,083 beneficiaries registered on the unified web portal, according to an official government release.
The progress was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who assessed the implementation of PM Awas Yojana (Urban) and the housing stock available under various state housing schemes. During the meeting, he directed all implementing agencies to accelerate the execution of housing projects across Maharashtra so that beneficiaries receive their homes within the prescribed timeline.
The approved houses cover multiple components of the scheme, including Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Housing in Partnership under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, and Affordable Rental Housing (ARH).
The Chief Minister instructed agencies to ensure that faster execution does not compromise construction quality. He said projects should strictly follow the prescribed standards and regulations while ensuring timely completion and handover of houses.
As part of the government's support measures, beneficiaries belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category are being provided five brass, equivalent to around 500 cubic feet, of sand free of cost for house construction.
The meeting also reviewed the Housing Stock Management and Maharashtra Shelter Fund Strengthening Policy, which has been introduced to improve the management and utilisation of housing inventory available with different government authorities. The policy aims to streamline housing allocation and address housing requirements more efficiently across the state.
An integrated system is also being developed to manage and allocate houses available with agencies such as MHADA, CIDCO and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). In addition, the Maharashtra government is developing a comprehensive Housing Stock Portal that will consolidate housing data from MHADA, CIDCO, MMRDA, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), SRA and various Central and State government housing schemes.
The proposed portal is expected to simplify the identification and allocation of available homes while extending housing access to special beneficiary groups, including persons with disabilities, mill workers, mathadi workers, dabbawalas and transgender persons.
According to the government, the current housing stock includes 15,291 housing units with MHADA, 11,830 units with CIDCO, 13,575 houses with local self-government bodies, 2,281 housing units with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and 84 housing units with Shivshahi Rehabilitation Project Ltd.
The government also stated that 3,945 housing units under the Shivshahi Rehabilitation Project have been temporarily allotted to various authorities for use as transit accommodation.
PM Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0 was launched by the Central government to continue support for eligible urban households that do not own a permanent house. The scheme promotes multiple housing models, including self-construction, affordable housing partnerships, rental housing and public-private participation, with financial assistance provided to eligible beneficiaries.
