Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in consortium with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has secured a large order to design and build an automated people mover (APM) system for Phase 1 of Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai. L&T said the order falls in the INR 2,500 crore to INR 5,000 crore category. The contract covers the design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness of the fully integrated, driverless mass transit system and its associated infrastructure. The airport, once fully developed, is planned to handle up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight annually.
L&T's transportation infrastructure business has secured the contract in partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Automated People Mover system at the new airport. The project will provide a grade-separated, fully automated transit connection within Phase 1 of Al Maktoum International Airport.
Under the design-and-build contract, the consortium will be responsible for delivering the APM system along with the infrastructure and supporting systems required for its operation. The scope covers multiple stages of the project, from design and construction through testing, commissioning and preparation for operations.
L&T's responsibilities include the design, procurement, delivery and integration of several critical components of the system. These include guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution systems, signalling and telecommunications infrastructure.
The contract also covers onboard communication systems for the APM vehicles, platform screen doors and equipment required at the depot. Together, these components will form an integrated driverless transportation system for the airport.
The order has been classified by L&T as a 'large' order, a category that the company defines as contracts valued between INR 2,500 crore and INR 5,000 crore. The project therefore represents a significant international order for L&T's transportation infrastructure business and adds to its portfolio of overseas infrastructure work.
Al Maktoum International Airport is being developed as a major aviation hub in Dubai. According to the company, the completed airport is planned to have an annual passenger-handling capacity of 260 million passengers and freight capacity of 12 million tonnes.
The scale of the planned airport creates a requirement for high-capacity internal transportation infrastructure capable of moving passengers efficiently across the airport complex. The automated people mover is expected to form part of this wider transportation infrastructure.
The project also highlights the role of international partnerships in delivering specialised transport systems. L&T brings its infrastructure design and construction capabilities to the consortium, while MHI provides its expertise in automated people mover and transportation systems.
For L&T, the Dubai order expands its exposure to large-scale airport and mass-transit infrastructure outside India. It also strengthens the company's international order book in transportation infrastructure, particularly in projects involving integrated systems and advanced mobility technologies.
The award comes as Dubai continues to develop Al Maktoum International Airport as a major long-term aviation and logistics hub. The planned capacity of the completed facility indicates the scale of infrastructure that will be required across passenger movement, airport operations and freight handling as development progresses.
