Heavy widespread rainfall disrupted road connectivity across Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, with 313 roads, 65 water supply schemes and 112 transformers affected, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Mandi recorded the highest number of road closures at 117, followed by Chamba with 74, Kullu with 60 and Shimla with 36. Other affected districts included Sirmaur, Kangra, Una, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. The disruption came as the weather department forecast a wet spell in the state until August 17 and issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in isolated areas until August 18. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 30, rain-related incidents have claimed 70 lives and caused estimated losses of INR 910 crore across the state.
Heavy widespread rainfall has disrupted road connectivity across Himachal Pradesh, with 313 roads closed and other essential infrastructure affected across the state on Wednesday. The State Emergency Operation Centre reported that 65 water supply schemes and 112 transformers were also affected by the adverse weather conditions.
Mandi was the worst-affected district, accounting for 117 blocked roads. Chamba reported 74 closures, while Kullu had 60 and Shimla recorded 36. Sirmaur reported 13 blocked roads, followed by Kangra with five and Una with four. Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti recorded two road closures each.
The disruption followed torrential rainfall across several parts of the state. Dhaulakuan recorded the highest rainfall at 80.5 mm since Tuesday evening. Jatton Barrage received 67 mm, while Dharamshala recorded 57.2 mm, Palampur 54.6 mm, Paonta Sahib 50.8 mm, Bajaura 37 mm and Nahan 26.5 mm during the period.
The situation had already affected road infrastructure on Tuesday, when more than 200 roads were closed following heavy rainfall. Educational institutions in the Kullu subdivision were also shut because of the weather conditions. In Solan district, one person was killed and two others were injured after a rock fell from a hillside onto a moving car in the Bhararighat area.
The continuing disruption has added to the damage caused by the monsoon across the state. Himachal Pradesh recorded 103.5 mm of rainfall between August 1 and August 12, compared with the normal 116 mm for the period, representing an 11% deficit. Despite the overall rainfall deficit, several localised episodes of intense rain have caused road blockages, landslides and damage to essential infrastructure.
Since the monsoon began on June 30, rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh have resulted in 70 deaths, including 14 attributed to landslides and one to a flash flood. The state government has estimated the cumulative losses caused by the monsoon at around INR 910 crore.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast a wet spell across Himachal Pradesh until August 17 and issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in isolated areas until August 18. The continuing weather conditions could therefore keep pressure on the state's road network and other infrastructure, particularly in areas already affected by landslides and rainfall-related damage.
