The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved an INR 334.89 crore internal flyover project at Visakhapatnam Port Authority to improve cargo evacuation and reduce congestion within the port premises. The proposed 3.584-km elevated corridor will connect Convent Junction with the Dock Area and separate road traffic from rail movement. The project is intended to address delays caused by nine railway level crossings, which currently experience around 18 gate closures a day. Construction is planned to minimise disruption to port operations, with the project scheduled for completion within 30 months of commencement.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has approved an INR 334.89 crore internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority, with the project aimed at improving cargo evacuation and reducing traffic congestion within the port premises. The proposal was approved by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal following appraisal by the Delegated Investment Board.
The project involves construction of a 3.584-km elevated corridor between Convent Junction and the Dock Area. The road corridor will separate vehicular and railway traffic within the port, addressing conflicts that currently affect the movement of cargo and vehicles.
A key objective of the project is to reduce delays at nine railway level crossings inside the port. According to the government, these crossings experience around 18 gate closures every day because of the volume of train movements. The frequent closures result in vehicle queues and waiting time, while also increasing fuel consumption and vehicle operating costs.
Once completed, the elevated corridor is expected to allow vehicles and cargo to move without being interrupted by railway traffic at these crossings. The project therefore aims to improve the efficiency of cargo evacuation from the port and reduce road-rail conflicts within the operational area.
The scope will include associated civil and electrical works, shifting of utilities and installation of safety systems. A five-year maintenance component has also been included in the project. Construction is planned in a manner intended to limit disruption to ongoing port operations, particularly around critical dock areas.
The project is aligned with the government's broader integrated infrastructure planning approach under the PM GatiShakti framework. The elevated connection is expected to strengthen last-mile movement within the port and facilitate faster evacuation of cargo, supporting Visakhapatnam Port's role in India's maritime logistics network.
The project is scheduled to be completed within 30 months from the commencement of construction. Its implementation will be closely linked to maintaining port operations during the construction period while developing the new elevated route.
The proposed flyover is therefore intended to address a specific operational bottleneck at Visakhapatnam Port by separating road and rail movements. By reducing interruptions at the nine railway crossings, the project is expected to improve cargo movement within the port and support more efficient connectivity between the port's road network and dock facilities.
The elevated corridor will form an internal connectivity link between Convent Junction and the Dock Area, allowing port-bound and port-exiting vehicles to avoid repeated stoppages caused by railway gate closures. This is expected to make cargo movement more predictable and reduce the time vehicles spend waiting within the port premises.
The investment also forms part of the government's focus on strengthening port-side infrastructure and improving last-mile logistics connectivity. By reducing road-rail conflicts within the port, the project is expected to support faster cargo evacuation and improve the efficiency of movement through Visakhapatnam Port.
