Five senior citizens, including three women, were injured after a cement-roofed gazebo collapsed at Mala Garden in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion East, on Wednesday evening. The open-sided structure, supported by a galvanised iron (GI) frame, gave way at around 4.45 pm while all five people were seated inside. The injured, aged between 64 and 79, were taken to the civic-run Sion Hospital in private ambulances before Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel reached the site. Officials said all five were in a stable condition following the incident.
Five senior citizens were injured after an open-sided structure with a cement roof collapsed at Mala Garden in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion East, on Wednesday evening, officials said.The incident occurred at around 4.45 pm, when the cement-roofed gazebo structure collapsed opposite T/18 building in the civic garden. Five people were seated inside the structure when it gave way.
According to civic officials, the structure consisted of a galvanised iron (GI) frame and a cement slab roof. The collapse resulted in injuries to all five senior citizens who were present underneath it at the time.The injured included three women. They were between 64 and 79 years old, according to officials. The five were taken to Sion Hospital, a civic-run facility, in private ambulances before personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade reached the location. Officials said the injured were in a stable condition.
Initial information received by the Fire Brigade indicated that people could have been trapped beneath the collapsed portion. Emergency personnel subsequently reached the garden and assessed the site. The incident has drawn attention to the condition and safety of structures installed within public recreational spaces. Gazebos and covered seating areas in civic gardens are commonly used by visitors for rest and shelter, making structural safety particularly important for elderly residents and other visitors.
The collapse took place at a BMC-run garden in Sion East, an area where Mala Garden serves as a recreational space for local residents. The incident has raised questions over the structural condition of the facility and the need for regular inspection and maintenance of such installations.
While the five injured residents were reported to be stable, the incident highlights the potential risks associated with ageing or inadequately maintained structures in public spaces. Ensuring that roofs, supporting frames and other built elements within civic gardens remain structurally sound is important for preventing similar accidents.
The authorities' response at the site involved the Fire Brigade and other emergency personnel, while the injured residents had already been shifted to hospital by private ambulances. Further assessment of the collapsed structure would be necessary to establish the reason for the failure.
The incident comes during Mumbai's monsoon, when civic infrastructure and public facilities are exposed to prolonged rainfall and weather-related stress. However, officials have not attributed the collapse to any specific cause in the information available so far.
The immediate priority remains the treatment and recovery of the five injured senior citizens, while the condition and safety of similar structures in the garden could warrant attention from the civic authorities.
