Visakhapatnam Port gets INR 334.89 crore flyover approval to ease cargo movement

Synopsis

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved an INR 334.89-crore internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority to improve cargo evacuation and reduce congestion within the port premises. The 3.584-km elevated corridor will connect Convent Junction with the Dock Area and separate road traffic from rail movement. The project is intended to address delays caused by frequent closures at nine railway level crossings, where gates close around 18 times a day due to train movements. The corridor will also reduce vehicle waiting time, fuel consumption and operating costs while improving movement inside the port.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has approved an INR 334.89-crore internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) to improve cargo evacuation, reduce traffic congestion and streamline the movement of vehicles within the port premises. 
The project involves construction of a 3.584-km elevated corridor connecting Convent Junction with the Dock Area. The flyover will separate road and rail traffic within the port, allowing vehicles carrying cargo to move without being affected by frequent train movements. 
The need for the project is linked to delays at nine major railway level crossings inside the port. These crossings currently experience around 18 gate closures every day because of the high volume of train exchanges. The repeated closures result in traffic congestion, longer waiting periods for vehicles and delays in cargo evacuation. 
The congestion also leads to higher fuel consumption and increased vehicle operating costs. With road traffic being moved onto the elevated corridor, the project is expected to reduce conflicts between road and rail movement and allow cargo vehicles to move more smoothly through the port. 
The approved project will cover associated civil and electrical works along with utility shifting and installation of safety systems. It will also include maintenance for five years after construction. 
Construction will be planned in a manner that limits disruption to existing port operations, particularly in important dock areas where cargo-handling activities continue. The project is scheduled to be completed within 30 months from the start of construction. 
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the flyover would address a key bottleneck at Visakhapatnam Port and help improve cargo movement and operational efficiency. 
The flyover has been part of Visakhapatnam Port's broader focus on improving internal and external connectivity. Earlier port plans had also identified a flyover linking the Convent Junction or Seahorse Junction area with the Dock Area as a connectivity project. VPA's recent administration reports have listed the flyover along with road connectivity projects linking the port to major road networks. 
The project is therefore expected to strengthen the movement of cargo within the port while addressing one of the operational constraints created by the interaction of road and railway traffic. Its implementation will be particularly important in the dock areas, where uninterrupted movement of cargo vehicles is directly linked to the efficiency of port operations.
