Global biotechnology company Amgen is set to establish a Science and Innovation Center at Genome Valley in Hyderabad as it expands its research and scientific operations in India.
Amgen India signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Telangana government this week in the presence of state IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu. Naveen Gullapalli, Managing Director of Amgen India, and Krishna Aditya, Special Secretary, Industries, Government of Telangana, exchanged the MoU documents.
The proposed centre is expected to create employment opportunities for highly skilled professionals and add to Hyderabad’s growing base of life sciences research and development activity. The Telangana government said the project would further strengthen the city’s position as a destination for global biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.
Amgen operates across around 100 countries and regions and develops therapies in areas including oncology, cardiovascular diseases, bone health, inflammation, respiratory diseases and rare diseases, among other serious medical conditions.
The new research centre will add to Amgen’s existing presence in Hyderabad. The company had announced its technology and innovation site in HITEC City in 2024, with the facility designed to accommodate up to 3,000 employees. The site was selected for Hyderabad’s talent base in medicine, life sciences, data sciences and technology.
The company has since expanded its research-related hiring in the city. Amgen’s current career listings include research positions in areas such as biostatistics, bioinformatics, scientific data and machine learning, while a dedicated site leadership role has also been created for Amgen Genome Valley.
Sridhar Babu said the continued expansion of global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in Telangana reflects the confidence these companies have in the state’s talent, infrastructure and life sciences ecosystem. He added that Telangana is developing into a preferred location for global life sciences companies, supported by its research capabilities, skilled workforce and established infrastructure at Genome Valley.The new Science and Innovation Center will become part of Amgen’s global Research and Development network, which currently comprises seven research laboratories. The facility is expected to be operational in 2027.
The centre will bring together scientists and technologists working across discovery chemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, and precision medicine. These teams will work with Amgen’s research locations in other parts of the world.
The company said the centre will combine experimental science with data and technology across its global research operations. The objective is to improve the speed, precision and efficiency of the medicine discovery and development process.
Jay Bradner, executive vice president of Research and Development, Artificial Intelligence and Data at Amgen, said the Genome Valley centre would expand the company’s ability to integrate experimental science with data and technology across its global research network while complementing its research operations in the US.
Naveen Gullapalli said Hyderabad’s life sciences ecosystem and STEM talent would allow Amgen to apply advanced technologies at scale. He added that the Genome Valley facility would bring biotechnology and digital innovation together to support the development of medicines for patients globally.
Amgen’s India operations already have a technology and innovation focus. The company had said its Hyderabad site would support digital capabilities across its global organisation and contribute to the development of its medicines pipeline.
Genome Valley has developed into an established life sciences cluster with research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology activity. The Telangana government has continued to attract companies and research-oriented investments to the cluster, including new manufacturing, laboratory and innovation projects.
For Amgen, the Genome Valley centre will complement its existing technology and innovation operations in Hyderabad. The two facilities are expected to provide a combination of laboratory-based scientific work and technology capabilities, supporting the company’s wider research activities.
The planned centre also comes as Amgen continues to build its research workforce in Hyderabad. Its current job listings show demand for specialised roles in areas including R&D strategy, bioinformatics, biostatistics and scientific data, indicating the broader range of research and technology functions being developed in the city.
