Synopsis

Himachal Pradesh is preparing to roll out a new industrial policy that will include lower electricity tariffs for industries as part of its efforts to attract fresh investments. The state government has reiterated its focus on uninterrupted power supply, green energy, IT infrastructure and industrial connectivity. Alongside plans to strengthen clean energy projects, the government is also advancing key infrastructure initiatives, including the Chandigarh-Baddi railway line and an IT park in Solan district, while continuing discussions on the state's share in Chandigarh.

Himachal Pradesh is set to introduce a new industrial policy that will include reduced electricity tariffs for industries as part of its strategy to attract more investments into the state. The government has also reaffirmed its commitment to providing uninterrupted 24x7 power supply and extending all possible support to industries and investors.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu while addressing the Chandigarh Leadership Conclave and the 23rd Annual General Meeting of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) Chandigarh in the past week, according to an official statement issued by the state government.
The Chief Minister said the government is working to create an investor-friendly environment by offering better infrastructure and policy support. He also stated that Himachal Pradesh is expected to emerge as one of the country's leading green hydrogen production hubs in the coming years as the state continues to expand its clean energy initiatives.
As part of these efforts, BioChar plants are being established across Himachal Pradesh to promote sustainable energy generation and better utilisation of biomass. In addition, a geothermal energy project has already been commissioned in Kinnaur district, marking another step towards diversifying the state's renewable energy portfolio.
Highlighting Himachal Pradesh's position as a power-surplus state, Sukhu said the government is signing a three-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Punjab for the supply of electricity. He added that the state would continue strengthening its long-standing partnership with Punjab by ensuring a reliable power supply.
The Chief Minister also said Himachal Pradesh offers a favourable environment for the information technology sector. The state government is working on developing data storage infrastructure and is setting up an IT park at Kandaghat in Solan district to support technology-led investments and employment.
Apart from industrial and energy initiatives, the government is continuing discussions with the Centre regarding Himachal Pradesh's 7.19 per cent share in Chandigarh.
On infrastructure development, Sukhu said work is progressing on the Chandigarh-Baddi railway line project. The Himachal Pradesh government will bear 50 per cent of the cost of land acquisition and construction. The railway line is expected to be completed within the next three years and is likely to improve connectivity for industrial hubs such as Baddi and Nalagarh, which together form one of North India's largest manufacturing clusters.
The proposed industrial policy comes as Himachal Pradesh continues to position itself as an investment destination by focusing on clean energy, manufacturing, information technology and infrastructure. The state has been promoting renewable energy projects while expanding industrial facilities to strengthen economic growth and create employment opportunities.
