The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) observed ‘Namaste Diwas’ by distributing personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to sanitation workers in recognition of their contribution to maintaining the city's cleanliness. Speaking at the event, Mayor Sujata Patil said the initiative provided an opportunity to express gratitude towards sanitation personnel, whose efforts have contributed significantly to Navi Mumbai's ranking among India's cleanest cities. The civic body also organised health check-up camps for sanitation workers across its 26 urban health centres and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening mechanised sanitation services and worker safety.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) organised a ‘Namaste Diwas’ programme at its Knowledge Centre headquarters in the past week, where personal protective equipment (PPE) kits were distributed to sanitation workers as part of an initiative to recognise their contribution to maintaining the city's cleanliness and public health.
Addressing the programme, Mayor Sujata Patil said sanitation workers had played the most significant role in helping Navi Mumbai secure its position in the Super Swachh League among India's cleanest cities. She said the observance of ‘Namaste Diwas’ served as an opportunity for the civic administration to acknowledge their dedicated service and express gratitude towards those responsible for maintaining urban hygiene. According to the Mayor, the distribution of PPE kits reflected the corporation's commitment to safeguarding the lives and well-being of sanitation workers.
The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat, Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, City Engineer Shirish Ardawad, Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Dr Ajay Gadde, Additional City Engineer Madan Waghchaude, Transport Manager Umakant Jangle, Executive Engineer Deepak Suryarao, Deputy Engineer Swapnil Desai, Chief Sanitation Officer Rajusingh Chavan, Junior Engineers Dilip Benke and Vaibhav Deshmukh, Sanitation Inspector Kiran Solaskar and other civic officials.
Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat described ‘Namaste Diwas’ as a day dedicated to honouring sanitation workers and said they had consistently demonstrated their commitment to public service. He noted that, apart from maintaining cleanliness within Navi Mumbai, civic sanitation teams had also extended assistance to other cities whenever emergency situations arose, highlighting their wider contribution beyond municipal limits.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde said sanitation personnel worked every day to protect public health through cleanliness and had repeatedly responded to emergency situations on a priority basis. He added that civic sanitation teams had also provided support in other cities during times of need, reflecting the work culture developed within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The Commissioner also said the corporation intends to further strengthen mechanised sanitation systems in the coming years.
During the programme, PPE kits were symbolically distributed to 10 sanitation workers from the sewerage department and 10 members of the Stree Mukti Sanghatana working as Parisar Sakhis. The civic body stated that the protective equipment formed part of its efforts to enhance occupational safety for personnel engaged in sanitation and waste management activities.
As part of the ‘Namaste Diwas’ initiative, the municipal corporation also organised health screening camps for sanitation workers at all 26 of its urban health centres, providing medical examinations aimed at promoting their health and well-being while recognising their essential role in maintaining urban sanitation services.
