• A car caught fire inside the northbound tunnel of Mumbai's Coastal Road, prompting authorities to temporarily close the tunnel and divert traffic.
• The occupants of the vehicle escaped safely, and no injuries or casualties were reported.
• Firefighters responded quickly and brought the blaze under control before it spread to other vehicles or tunnel infrastructure.
• The incident caused traffic congestion along nearby stretches before normal movement was restored after emergency operations were completed.
A fire involving a moving car inside the northbound tunnel of Mumbai's Coastal Road briefly disrupted traffic on Wednesday after authorities temporarily closed the tunnel to facilitate emergency response operations. The incident triggered panic among motorists travelling through the enclosed corridor, although all occupants of the vehicle managed to exit safely and no injuries were reported.
According to officials, the vehicle caught fire while travelling through the tunnel, leading to the rapid deployment of personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, traffic police and other emergency agencies. As a precaution, vehicular movement through the affected tunnel was halted while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and ensure the area was safe for reopening.
The fire was contained without affecting any neighbouring vehicles or causing structural damage to the tunnel. Emergency teams also carried out inspections to remove the damaged vehicle and verify that ventilation, lighting and other tunnel systems remained operational before traffic was allowed to resume.
The temporary closure resulted in traffic congestion along the Breach Candy and adjoining stretches of the Coastal Road, with motorists being diverted through alternate routes. Traffic personnel remained on-site to manage vehicle movement and minimise delays until normal operations were restored.
The Coastal Road's tunnel network is equipped with surveillance systems, ventilation infrastructure, fire detection mechanisms and emergency response protocols designed to handle incidents in enclosed spaces. The prompt evacuation of the occupants and swift response by emergency services helped prevent the situation from escalating into a larger safety concern.
Authorities are expected to determine the exact cause of the fire after examining the damaged vehicle. Preliminary information indicates that the incident was confined to the vehicle itself, with no indication of any fault in the tunnel infrastructure.
The episode highlights the importance of emergency preparedness on major urban transport corridors, particularly within tunnel environments where quick coordination between fire services, police and traffic authorities is essential to ensure public safety and restore normal traffic movement with minimal disruption.
