Synopsis

• The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demolished an unauthorised school building in Govandi, marking the civic body's first demolition of an illegally constructed educational institution in Mumbai.
• The action followed complaints and inspections that found the school building had been constructed without mandatory civic permissions and in violation of development regulations.
• Civic officials carried out the demolition with police protection after issuing statutory notices and completing the legal process, while ensuring that students were not present during the operation.
• The BMC said the move reflects its stricter stance against illegal constructions, irrespective of the nature of the establishment, and warned that similar action would be taken against other unauthorised structures.

In a first for Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demolished an illegally constructed school building in Govandi, signalling a tougher approach towards unauthorised constructions, including those operating as educational institutions. The civic body said the action was taken after the structure was found to have been built without the required approvals and in violation of building regulations.
According to civic officials, the demolition followed complaints regarding the legality of the building. Subsequent inspections revealed that the structure lacked mandatory permissions from the BMC and did not comply with the provisions of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations. After issuing notices to the management and completing the statutory process, the civic body proceeded with demolition.
The operation was carried out under tight police security to prevent any law-and-order issues. Authorities ensured that students and staff were not inside the premises during the demolition, with the exercise planned to minimise disruption while maintaining public safety. Officials stated that all necessary precautions were taken before heavy machinery was deployed to raze the unauthorised portions of the building.
BMC officials described the action as the first instance of the civic body demolishing an illegal school structure in the city. They maintained that educational institutions are not exempt from compliance with planning and construction norms and that enforcement would be based solely on the legality of the structure.
The civic administration also reiterated that the drive against illegal constructions has been intensified across Mumbai. Officials said the corporation would continue to identify buildings erected without approvals and initiate action in accordance with the law, regardless of whether they are residential, commercial or institutional properties.
The demolition underscores the BMC's renewed focus on strengthening enforcement of development regulations and ensuring that all buildings, including schools, adhere to statutory safety and planning requirements. Civic authorities have indicated that similar action may be taken against other unauthorised structures if violations are found during ongoing inspections.
