Synopsis

• The Panchkula Municipal Corporation (MC) has identified around INR 37 crore in pending property tax dues from major defaulters, including hotels, IT companies, commercial establishments and government bodies, as part of an intensified recovery campaign.
• The civic body has begun issuing notices to defaulting property owners and warned that strict enforcement measures, including sealing of properties, may be initiated against persistent defaulters.
• Officials said recovering the outstanding dues is essential to strengthen the corporation's finances and improve the delivery of civic infrastructure and public services across the city.
• The recovery drive follows the conclusion of the property tax interest waiver scheme, after which the municipal corporation has adopted a stricter approach towards tax collection.

The Panchkula Municipal Corporation (MC) has stepped up its property tax recovery efforts after identifying approximately INR 37 crore in outstanding dues from major defaulters, including hotels, IT firms, commercial establishments and government institutions. The civic body has launched a focused enforcement drive aimed at improving tax compliance and strengthening municipal revenues.
According to municipal officials, notices have been issued to large defaulters, with priority being given to properties carrying substantial unpaid tax liabilities. The corporation has indicated that recovery proceedings will be intensified against those who fail to clear their dues despite repeated notices.
The latest exercise comes after the expiry of the 100% interest waiver scheme offered on outstanding property tax dues. During the concession period, the civic body managed to collect only a small portion of its overall recovery target despite organising tax collection camps and awareness initiatives. With the waiver period now over, officials have adopted a stricter enforcement strategy.
Municipal Commissioner Vinay Kumar has directed officials to prioritise recovery from major defaulters and follow the prescribed legal process. The corporation has warned that continued non-payment could result in stronger measures, including the sealing of defaulting properties, in accordance with municipal regulations.
Officials said the recovery of pending taxes is critical for improving the corporation's financial health and ensuring adequate funding for civic infrastructure and public services. Property tax remains one of the principal revenue sources for urban local bodies, supporting expenditure on roads, sanitation, drainage, public lighting and other municipal services.
The corporation is expected to continue monitoring compliance while pursuing recovery from both commercial and institutional defaulters. By strengthening enforcement and improving tax collection, the Panchkula Municipal Corporation aims to enhance its financial capacity and support the city's growing infrastructure and service requirements.
