The Centre has approved INR 1,000 crore for the construction of 2,400 km of rural roads in West Bengal under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and sanctioned one lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY). The announcements were made following a meeting between Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The Union government has also sanctioned INR 8,508 crore for rural employment initiatives until March 2027, while indicating that the combined outlay for the programmes, including the state's contribution, will exceed INR 12,064 crore. The approvals are intended to strengthen rural connectivity, housing delivery and employment generation across the state.
The Centre has sanctioned INR 1,000 crore for the construction of 2,400 km of rural roads in West Bengal under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and approved the construction of one lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY). The approvals were announced in the past week after a meeting between Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, marking a fresh push for rural infrastructure and housing development in the state.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Adhikari said the Centre had sanctioned INR 1,000 crore in the first phase for the construction of 2,400 km of rural roads across West Bengal under PMGSY. He also confirmed that Chouhan had handed over the approval for one lakh PMAY houses to him and Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh.
Alongside the road and housing approvals, Chouhan announced that the Rural Welfare Ministry had sanctioned INR 8,508 crore for West Bengal for a nine-month period ending 31 March 2027 under the state's rural employment programme. He added that the combined financial outlay for the initiatives, including the state government's contribution, would exceed INR 12,064 crore.
The approvals build on a broader package of rural development measures announced for the state over recent months, with the Centre seeking to improve connectivity, expand housing availability and strengthen employment generation through centrally supported schemes. The road allocation is expected to improve access across rural areas, while the PMAY sanction is aimed at increasing the supply of permanent housing for eligible beneficiaries.
During the briefing, Chouhan also said infrastructure projects worth INR 82,492 crore had previously been undertaken in West Bengal but remained incomplete because of a lack of cooperation from the previous state government. He stated that the obstacles affecting these projects had now been removed under the present administration, enabling implementation to progress at a faster pace.
The latest approvals come as rural infrastructure and affordable housing continue to remain central to public investment priorities. Expansion of rural road networks under PMGSY is intended to improve connectivity between villages and economic centres, while PMAY seeks to provide permanent housing to eligible rural households. Together with employment funding, the measures are expected to support infrastructure creation and improve access to housing and public services across West Bengal.
