Synopsis

The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) has directed officials to implement a series of immediate measures aimed at improving road safety in Amaravati amid ongoing construction activity. APCRDA Commissioner V. Vijaya Ramaraju held a review meeting with traffic police, RTO officials and other departments, issuing instructions to regulate heavy vehicle movement, strengthen traffic enforcement and improve monitoring. The measures include speed control, QR code-based vehicle tracking, deployment of additional traffic personnel, alternative routes for construction vehicles and restrictions on heavy vehicle movement during peak commuting hours.

The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) has announced a set of immediate measures to improve road safety and reduce accidents in Amaravati, where large-scale infrastructure and construction work is underway. The directions were issued by APCRDA Commissioner V. Vijaya Ramaraju, IAS, during a review meeting held with traffic police officials, representatives of the Guntur district administration, and officials from various APCRDA departments at the APCRDA office in Rayapudi.
The Commissioner instructed all concerned departments, including the traffic police and contractors engaged in Amaravati's construction works, to implement the measures without delay to ensure safer travel across the capital region.
As part of the directions, the traffic police department, in coordination with the Guntur Collector, has been asked to deploy barricades and speed guns to regulate the speed of heavy vehicles operating within Amaravati. The police department has also been instructed to post adequate traffic personnel at key road junctions to improve traffic management and monitor vehicle movement.
To strengthen enforcement, the Commissioner directed officials to work with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to introduce a technical system that ensures heavy vehicles involved in construction activities do not exceed a speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour.
The APCRDA has also decided to introduce a QR code-based vehicle identification system for all vehicles participating in capital city works. Under this system, every vehicle will carry a QR code containing its details, enabling authorities to quickly identify both the vehicle and the concerned contractor in the event of an accident or any other incident.
Officials were further directed to immediately prepare and submit complete route maps for vehicles used by different contractors for transporting construction materials and carrying out development works across Amaravati. The move is expected to improve traffic planning and help authorities monitor the movement of heavy vehicles more effectively.
The Commissioner also asked officials to prepare a proposal to develop the E8 Road as an alternative route for heavy vehicles carrying construction materials, reducing dependence on the E3 Road, also known as the Seed Axis Road. The proposal aims to divert construction traffic away from busy stretches and improve overall road safety.
In addition, the police department has been advised to restrict the movement of heavy vehicles during peak commuting hours, particularly between 8 am and 11 am and again between 4 pm and 7 pm, when local residents and government employees are most likely to be travelling.
The latest measures come as Amaravati continues to witness increased construction activity following the revival of several capital city infrastructure projects. With the number of heavy vehicles operating in the region expected to rise, the APCRDA is focusing on strengthening traffic management, improving monitoring systems and reducing the risk of road accidents.
