A 34-year-old construction worker died after falling from the 22nd floor of an under-construction Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) residential tower in Wadala, Mumbai. The incident occurred while terrace work was underway on a building where possession had already been handed over to several occupants. RAK Marg police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall, including whether prescribed workplace safety measures and construction protocols were followed.
A 34-year-old construction worker died after falling from the 22nd floor of an under-construction Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) residential tower in Wadala, Mumbai, while carrying out terrace work. The incident took place on July 6 at a redevelopment project where possession had already been handed over to several flat owners, although construction activities were continuing on the upper levels of the building. The worker sustained severe injuries in the fall and was declared dead after being taken to hospital. RAK Marg police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and initiated an investigation into the incident.
According to the police, the deceased was engaged in construction work on the terrace when he fell from the building. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the fall and whether adequate safety measures were in place at the site. Officials are also assessing compliance with workplace safety requirements applicable to high-rise construction projects.
Police said statements of co-workers, contractors and other persons associated with the project are being recorded as part of the inquiry. The investigation will also examine whether the worker had been provided with the necessary personal protective equipment and whether established safety protocols were followed during work at height. The findings will determine whether negligence or violations of safety norms contributed to the accident.
The incident has drawn attention to safety management at redevelopment and high-rise construction sites where construction activities continue even after partial occupation of completed sections. Such projects often require ongoing structural, finishing and terrace works while ensuring adequate separation between occupied areas and active construction zones.
Authorities confirmed that an ADR has been registered while further inquiries continue. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, police may consider additional legal action if evidence of negligence or non-compliance with statutory safety obligations emerges. The Labour Department and other relevant authorities may also examine the case if violations of workplace safety regulations are established.
Construction worker fatalities remain a recurring concern across urban redevelopment projects, particularly those involving high-rise residential buildings. Safety measures such as full-body harnesses, lifelines, guardrails, safety nets and continuous supervision are prescribed for work at elevated levels under applicable labour and construction safety regulations. Investigations into such incidents generally focus on whether contractors, site engineers and project supervisors complied with these requirements before permitting work to proceed.
The Wadala incident adds to the scrutiny surrounding worker safety at active construction sites in Mumbai, where redevelopment and SRA projects continue at scale. The police investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events leading to the fatal fall and determine whether any breach of statutory safety standards or construction site management responsibilities occurred.
